To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, HOWARD R. DANIEL- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Horse-Brush, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brushes for cleaning horses and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficientfountain brush which will be so constructed as to avoid leakage, and to provide no outlet for the water except through the bristles, and also to provide a brush which may be easily renewed after the bristles have been worn out.

A device by which the objects of my invention are attained is illustrated in the aC- companying drawings, and the invention consists in certain novel features thereof, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, partly broken away, of a brush embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line lL- fl of Fig. 2.

The brush back 1 may be of any desired construction and is preferably a wooden block of elliptical outline provided with a plurality of perforations or openings 2 therethrough. The tufts 3 of bristles are secured in the back 1 in any desired manner and in the edge of the back is a groove 4 extending entirely around the-same.

The cover or cap 5 may be of any desired material but is preferably a single piece of steel corresponding in shape to theback and provided with a bead 6 near its lower edge adapted to fit in the groove 4: in the back 1, whereby the cap will be held in proper engagement with the back. A clamping wire 7 is placed around the cap and body within the groove in the cap presented by the said bead 6, and the ends of this clamping wire are formed into perforated lugs or ears 8 through which a securing bolt or screw 9 is inserted. It will be readily seen that by tightening up this securing bolt or screw, the clamping wire will be drawn tightly against the cap within the bead so that the cap will be held securely upon the body or back of the brush and cannot be easily dislodged. In order to permit the cap to be easily sprung over the back or body of the brush, a small slit or notch 10 l is provided in the edge of the cap and a block of rubber or similar material 11 is fitted in the edge of the back or body immedlately in rear of and spanning the said slit so that a water-tight joint will be provided at this point. In the wall of the cap above the said slit, an opening is provided through which the water pipe 12 is inserted, the projecting end of the said pipe being threaded to engage and hold a valve casing 13 in which is a cut-ofip valve 111 bv which the flow of water to the brush may bue regulated. The outer end of the valve casing is attached to a hose or other iexible pipe 15 which may lead to any suitable s ource of supply. The water pipe 12- has a washer 16 and a nut 17 mounted thereon, and this washer and nut are intended to bear against the inner face of the cap while a second similar washer 18 and nut 19 are mounted on the endof the pipe after the same has been inserted through the cap and adapted to be turned home against the cap so as to firmly clamp the pipe within the cap and form a water-tight joint around the pipe. The inner end of the pipe is supported by a clamping band or bracket Q0 which passes under the pipe and holds the same against a filling or spacing block 21 arranged above the pipe, as clearly shown.

The use of the device will be readily ap` preciated. rThe brush is moved overI the body of the horse and the water permitted to flow through the pipe to the interior of the cap, whence it will escape through the perforations in the body or back of the brush and escape through the bristles to the animal. The flow of water may be regulated according to the condition of the a'nimaPs skin so that mud or other matter may be quickly and easily removed and the horse quickly cleaned.

in assembling the parts, the pipe is fitted within t-he cap by having its end inserted outward through the opening` in the side wall of the cap and the clamping band may be riveted to the cap either before or after the pipe is inserted, inasmuch as the pipe is shorter than the cap and, consequently, may be easily inserted into the band and then shifted so as to have its end projected through the side of the cap. After the pipe has been thus placed in proper pos1 tion, the nut 19 and washer 18 are fitted on the projecting end and turned home so as to securely fasten the pipe in place. The

valve and 'hose may be then easily brought into proper position, as Will be readily understood. rlhe body or back o' the brush is then placed Within the cap with the bead oit the cap in engagement with the groove in the edge of the body and the clamping wire then drawn taut around the cap so as to firmly clamp the cap in place.

The device is extremely simple in its construction and arrangement of its parts and its lite is practically limitless, as the Wear ivill all be on the bristles, and in order to substitute a neu' brush for a Worn out brush, it is necessary merely to loosen the clamping wire 7, remove the old brush, and insert the new ne, a'lj'ter which the Wire ivill be tightened up, as will be readily understood.

From the foregoing description, taken in coni'iection .vith the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and vvhilc l have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device Which l novv consider to be the best embodiment thereo't, l desire to have it understood that the device. shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when dosired as are Within the scope ot the claims 'aln'ieuded hereto.

Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. ln combination with a brush having a continuons groove provided at the edge of the haelt and extending entirely around the same, a metallic cap made of a single piece corresponding in shape to the back of the brush and provided ivith an inwardly turned bead near its lower edge and extending entirely around the cap and fitting the groove ot the back, said bead forming a groove on the outside of the cap, a clamping Wire placed around the cap and litting partially Within the groove ot' the bead, said cap having a slit at one point of the beaded edge thereof, a packing fitted against the brush back immediately in rear o and spanning the said slit, lugs provided on the ends of lthe Wire at the said slit, and a bolt connecting the said lugs and spanning said slit.I

The combination of a brush back, a. cap removably fitted thereon, a pipe inserted through one side of the cap and terminating Within the same, Washers on the said pipe on opposite sides of the said cap, nuts on the pipe bearing against the said washers, and a support for the inner end of the pipe secured to the under side of the cap.

3. The combii'iation of a brush body, a cap removably secured to the same, a pipe secured in the side ot the cap and terminating within the same, a spacing block fitted between the cap and the top of the pipe, and a clamping band passed around the pipe and secured to the cap at the sides of the said spacing block.
