Description

J. I). BRYAN, I BOB-UBBING'BRUSH. ArrmoA'non nun An, 3,1912.-
Patented Oct. 15,1912,
JOSEPH BRYAN, or OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA.
SCRUBBING-BBUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15,1912;
Application filed April-3, 1912. 7 Serial 1%. 888,130.
To all whom at may concern: I Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. BRYAN, a citizen of the United States,,residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma andS tate of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inScrub: bing-Brushes, of which-the following is a description, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed.
ing water to the surface that is being brushed.
Another object is to afford improved means for securing the bristles in the brush head.
lVith the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruction and operation which are hereinafter-fully described and pointed outin the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is an elevation view of the improved brush,
showing also a small fragment of flexible,
hose for supplying the water to the. brush. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the head or delivery end of the brush. Fig. 8 is a-greatly enlarged sectional view illustrat-' ing more fully the manner of securing the bristles in the brush head, v
All the views are taken in the same direction, and like characters of reference designate like parts throughout all of them.
I Referring to the several figures, the im'-.
proved brush comprises, in part, a handle portion 4 which terminates in a substantiallyhemispherical or dome-like'head 5, said handle and headbeing hollow to allow the passage of water through them. The handle 4 is adapted to beattached to a flexible hose 6, so thatthe water maybe supplied to it'under pressure from any suitable source, andit is also provided with a manually operable valve 7 so that the supplyof water maybe adjusted or entirely out off at will.
' The dome 5 is provided with the usual bristles 8, to have a brushing or scrubbing action on the article to be cleaned, these brit- An object of the invention is to provide a brush having improved means for applyr tles being arranged in a plurality of groups whlch. are securely set in holes 9 in .said' head which areso radially disposed about the dome to be located in line with the natural spurts of ,water that break from the column coming from the nozzle. In fastening the bristles .in'place in the holes9', they are set around the surfaces thereof as shown, and
- small tubular thimbles 10 then forced into .said holes from the interior of the head to wedge said bristles in place. The inner ends of the thimbles 10 are flanged, as at 11,
I to limit their extension into the holes 9, and
said flanges..may be soldered to theinner surface of the head 5- tohold said thimbles in place. In thus arranging the bristles 8, and in using thetubular thimbles '10 to secure them, the water is allowed to issue from the head 5 directl'y in the center of each group of bristles and-in line therewith, thereby keepingthem washed clean of all dirt that may result from washing or scrubhing. Further,-the water is kept from the" base of the tufts of scrubbing material which is located between thewall of the hole and the thimble. I
In the use of the improved brush, it is preferable that the force with which the water is ejected be strongest in the direction .of length of the handle 4', asindicated by the, arrow 12 in 2. To this end, the
handle 4. is provided with an extension 13.
into the head 5 and well toward the front or delivery-portion "of said head, this arrangement causing the water to be delivered forcibly out of the head at and immediately surrounding the delivery end of said extension 13, while part of it'bounds or eddies backward and issues out the rearward portion of the headwithless force.
For convenience of construction, the head 5 is screw-threaded,as' at 14, and screwed onto the outwardly-flanged port-ion 15 of the handle 4. 4
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: v
A fountain-brush comprising a base, a nozzle extending therefrom at right-angles and integral therewith, a flange about-the base, a screw-threaded rim in juxtaposition to said flange, a dome housing said nozzle provided with screw-threads to engage the screw-threads on said screw threaded rim,
said dome being also provided with perforations located radially with respect to the nozzle, tufts in the perforations, thim bles for holding thetufts in and against the walls of the perforations, and having channels through whichgbhe fluid spurt-s.
Witness my hand this 30 day of March,
JOSEPH D. BRYAN. Witnesses FRANK P. SHEPARD, K. C. RAY.
