J. 0. BONNER.
BRUSH.
No. 350,185. Patented Oct. 5, 1886.

JOSEPH O. BONNER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN AMES, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,185, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed December 17, 1885 Serial No. 185,956. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH O. BONNER, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means of Attaching Handles to Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention more particularly relates to horse and other brushes, in which a flexible to band or loopshaped handle running across the back of the brush-block is Ordinarily secured to the sides of the block by various means.
My invention consists in certain combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter del 5 scribed, by which I secure economy of manufacture, neatness, and durability.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side view of a brush having my invention applied; Fig. 2, atransverse section of the same; Fig. 3, a view in perspective of one of the metal clamps or fastenings, and Fig. 4 a view in perspective of a staple used to secure said fastening.
A indicates the brushback, and B its bristles. G is the cross-handle, made of leather or other suitable material; and D D, the metal clamps or fastenings, stamped or 0th er wise made out of sheet metal, and of a sufficient length to receive down within them the ends of the bandle C where the same overlap the sides of the back. For this purpose each clamp D is made 5 on its inner face with end lips, I) b, and a bottom lip, c, which latter passes beneath the un der Or inner surface of the back A, while the end lips, b b, abut against or slightly enter the sides of the back. These pocket-like clamps 40 are secured to their places on the sides of the back and serve to attach the ends of the ban dle thereto by means of an elongated staple,
E, which is driven through the clamp from its outside, through the end of the handle inserted in said clamp, and into the wood of the back. 5 An indentation, e, is formed in each clamp D for the body of the staple to lie in, said indentation forming a bulge on the inner face of the clamp, which, on driving the staple home, forces the end of the flexible handle into a crease in the side of the back. This forms a very secure, durable, simple, and cheap fastening for the handle, and gives a very neat finish to the brush.
If desired, instead of the staples E, screws, 5 5 nails, or tacks may be used for securing the clamps D and ends of the handle held by them to the brush-back; but the staples are preferable.
Having thns described my inventiOn,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the brush-back A, the handle 0, the metallic clamps or fastenings D, having lclosed bottoms, and devices for se curing the clamps to the sides of the brushback.
2. In brushes having flexible cross-handles applied to their backs and metal clamps or fastenings for securing the same, the metal clamps D, constructed on their inner faces with end lips, I) b, and a bottom lip, c, essentially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the brush-back A, the flexible handle 0, having indentations on their outer sides and bulges on their inner sides that correspond with creases in the sides of the brushback, and the staples E E, for se curing the fastenings to the brushback.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOSEPH O. BONNER.
