To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. PEN- DERGAST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a broom comprising a head provided with filaments of broom or brush material such as broom corn, and a handle detachably connected with the head, the head being of relatively inexpensive construction so that when the broom filaments are worn out the head can be removed from the handle and discarded and a new one substituted for it, the construction of the head being such that its parts can be easily assembled and secured, the structural features which distinguish my invention being of such nature that the work of making the broom head may well be performed by blind people, so that the invention increases the field of activity open to those afflicted with blind ness.

The invention consists in the improvement which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a. broom embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 represents a section on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 represents a side view of a portion of the broom head removed from the handle; Fig. 5 represents a view of the blank from which the case forming a part of the broom head is formed; Fig. 6 represents an edge view of a part of the broom.

Similar reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all the figures.

My improved broom head comprises a case formed from a sheet metal blank of the outline shown by Fig. 5, said blank having a body portion 1, wings 2, and 2 at opposite ends of the body portion and connected therewith by necks 1, 4t and a wing 3 projecting from the body portion between the wings 2 and 2 and connected with the body portion by a neck 5. The described blank is bent to bring the wings 2. and 2 into parallelism with the body portion 1, the wing 2 overlapping the wing 2 and to cause the wing 3 to bear upon the outer surfaces of the wings 2 and 2. This bending operation produces a case having a fiat contlnuous side composed of the body portion 1, a pleced side composed of the wings 2, 2 and 3, a closed inner end formed by the neck 5 and closed edge walls formed by the necks 4., 4:.

After the blank has been bent into case form and before securing the wings as hereinafter described to make said form permanent, a filling ,which is composed of the assemblage of brush filaments such as broom corn is placed in the case, the inner ends of the filaments bearing on the neck 5. The sides and ends of the filling are confined by the sides and by the necks 4., 4: of the case. The portions of the brush filaments which are inserted in the case may be cemented together before insertion, if desired. After the filling is inserted I make the form of the case permanent and at the same time secure the filling thereto by driving malleable nails 7, preferably of wire, through the sides of the case and through the filling 6, each nail having a head 8 bearing on the outer surface of one side of the case and its other end being clenched, as shown at 9, bearing on the outer surface of the opposite side of the case. Some of the nails 7 pass through the wing 3 and others pass through the portion of the wing 2 which overlaps the wing 2.

To complete the broom head it is only necessary to form in the case and in the portion of the filling inclosed therein a bolt hole for the reception of a bolt 11, adapted to secure a handle 12to the broom head, said bolt hole being formed by drilling coinciding holes 10 in the opposite sides of the case, the tool which forms these holes at the same time forming a hole in the interposed portion of the filling 6. The handle is formed at its inner end to abut against the neck 5 of the case and is provided with ears 13, 13 projecting from its inner end and adapted to bear on the opposite sides of the case, said ears having bolt holes 14 which coincide with the bolt holes 10 in the case when the end of the handle comes to a bearing on the neck 5.

The bolt 11 is adapted to be inserted in the holes 10 and 141 and is provided at one end with a head 15 bearing on one of the ears 13 and at the other end with a nut 16 bearing on the opposite ear 13. The ears 13 are provided with shanks 13 which are substantially semi-circular in cross section and fit the circular end of the handle 12, said shanks being provided with shoulders 13', Fig. 6, which project under and bear on the neck 5 of the case. Said shoulders form inetallic bearings which prevent the broom head from tipping or turning on the bolt 11. The shanks 13'" are secured to the handle 12 by means of a bolt 17. v

I claim A broom head comprising a sheet metal case provided With overlapping side Wings and a single end Wing overlapping said side wings, brush filaments in the case and projecting beyond the open end thereof, means for securing said wings in their overlapped positions, said means also servin to fasten the filaments in the case, a handle having ears embracing said case, and means for fastening the handle to the closed end of 20 the case and also aiding to retain said Wings in overlapped positions.
