SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,478, dated August 27, 1901.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GAETANO GIODA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaners for Hair- Combs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved cleaning attachment for hair-combs, and more especially for the fine tooth combs used for cleaning the scalp and combing out knots orentanglemcnts of hair, said cleaning attachment being intended to be retained permanently on the comb and adapted to engage the teeth at both sides and forming at the same time a kind of holder for the comb.

The invention consists of a cleaning attachment for hair-combs which comprises a frame retained and sliding on the comb, two opposite sides of the frame being provided with slots and thin transverse cleaning strips or strippers across said slots, all as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a hair-comb with my improved cleaning attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section on line 4 4, Fig, l, of a portion of the comb and cleaning device; and Fig. 5 is` a perspective view of the parts of the device shown in Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a hair-comb of that class which is provided with line teetha at opposite sides, such as are used for cleaning the scalp. Along the ends of the body of the comb A are guided end pieces b b of a sliding frame B, said end pieces being formed of fiat pieces of sheet metal, connected at the ends by longitudie nally-slotted side pieces b', that are provided with thin transverse metallic cleaning strips or strippers c, that enter into the spaces between the teeth a of the comb. to the width of the body of the comb plus the length of the teeth at one side of the same, so that when the cleaning strips or strippers c of one side are in position at the end of the teeth at that side the opposite cleaners or strippers are located at the base of the teeth at the corresponding side, as shown in Figs. l and 8. The cleaner-strips c are preferably notched at the ends, so as to be engaged by the bentover edges b2 of the slotted supporting-frame, as shown in Fig. 3, which thereby hold the cleaner-strips firmly in position. When the comb is used, the frame of the cleaning attachment serves also as a means for firmly holding the comb, and the comb may be firmly held in the hand, because the frame is open at the sides between the side pieces and the end pieces.

When it is desired to clean the comb, the slidefra1ne,with its cleaner strips or strippers, is moved over toward the points of the projecting teeth until one side of the frame is in line with said points, while the opposite side is moved over toward the bases of the teeth at the opposite side of the comb, so that the teeth at this side can be used for combing the hair and cleaning the scalp. While the cleaner strips or strippers at one side of the frame are moved over toward the ends or points of the teeth, the combings of hair, dandrutf, dre., are cleared or stripped from the teeth by the cleaner-strips, so that by the shifting motion of the frame alternately to opposite sides the teeth are always cleaned. In this manner the successive shifting of the comb in the cleaning frame produces the cleaningof the teeth alternately at the opposite sides of the comb.

The cleaning attachment is preferably made of suitable sheet metal, either j apanned or silver or nickel plated, according to the finish desired. It forms a non-removable attach ment to the hair-comb, which is always ready for use, so as to keep the teeth in per ectly clean condition.

Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-A l. The combination, with a hair-comb having teeth at opposite edges, of a shiftable frame thereon provided with end pieces, and

slotted side pieces provided with transverse cleaner strips or strippers that enter between the teeth of the comb, the Width of said frame being approximately equal to the Width of the main body of the comb, plus the length of the teeth at one side thereof, and said frame being open at the sides of the comb, substantially as set forth.

2. In a cleaning attachment for combs, the combination with a comb having teeth at opposite edges, of a shiftable cleaning attachment thereon composed of end pieces and longitudinally-slotted side pieces having transverse cleaner strips or reeds, the ends of said cleaner-strips being notched and secured to the bent-over sides of the longitudinal side pieces, substantially as set forth.
