IMPROVEMENT IN NAILS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,716, dated December 15, 1874; application iiled September 28, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY S. GUsHMAN, of Milford, of the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot or Shoe Sole Nails, and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of Which- Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side View, of one of my improved nails. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of it, taken through the channel of its point, such figures being on a scale enlarged or above the common size of the nail.

This nail has an oblique tapering and grooved point, and a shank notched on opposite sides, all being as represented. The extreme end of the point is in, or about in, the prolongation of one side of the nail, and such point, along its beveled face, is grooved or channeled, which makes it analogous to a gouge.

In the drawings, a denotes the shank; b, the the point; f, the clinching-slope 5 c, the channel or groove of the point, and d d d d d d the two ranges or series of notches. The 0bject of the groove or channel o in the clinching-slope is to enable the nail not only to enter a sole easier, but to preserve its direction better, than it would were the face or clinchingslope f plain or without any groove.

The groove prevents the nail from revolving or turning around in the sole while the nail may be in the act of passing' into it, and of being deflected, by the clnching-slope of the oblique point, so as to force theleather into the notches of the sides of the nail. Furthermore, the channel ridges the material, and leaves more of it to enter the notches than would be the case were the face without the channel.

It has been found that the nail made with the oblique and grooved point and notched shank, as described, works to much better advantage than one Without the groove, but made in other respects, as represented in the United States Patent No. 147,825, dated February 24, 1874, and invented by me.

I therefore claim- My improvement in the shoe-sole nail, having the notched shank and oblique point, as described, such point channeled or grooved on its clinching slope or facelengthwise thereof, all substantiallyr as hereinbefore explained, and as represented.
