RICHARD C. LAMBART, OF QUINOY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO MELLEN BRAY, OF NEVTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent o. 147,506, dated February 17, 1874; application tiled December 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Brennan C. LAMEART, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Boot and Shoe Heel, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the construction of a composite heel, and has for its object the production of a heel that shall possess many of the advantages and have the appearance of a genuine sole-leather heel, while at the same time it can be manufactured at a much less cost, and it consists in the use of a core of wood, or other suitable cheap material, having V-shaped grooves formed in the outer edges thereof, and extending around the sides and rear of said core, in combination with a covcring for said core made of strips of soleleather, V-shaped in cross-section, produced by splitting narrow strips of leather longitudinally and diagonally, in the same manner that the rands are now cut for building up heels, and bending the said Vshaped strips around said core, with the point or" the V toward the core and fitting into the V-shaped grooves, and securing them in position by nailing them to the core, and securing the heel to the shoe by means of nails passing through all of said strips outside of 'the core. v
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan of the upper side of the heel. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
under side of the heel with the finishing-lift removed. Fig. 4 is a plan of the core, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the A is the core, made of wood or other suitable cheap material, and having the grooves a a formed around the sides or rear end, and b I; b are the V-shaped strips of leather, cut in the form of a rand and bent around the core A, with their thin edges inward, as shown, and secured to gether and to the core A by the nails c o, driven from the upper side, and d d, driven from the lower side, as shown in Fig. 2, or by any other suitable fastening device. Bis a finishing-lift of leather, put on to cover up the wood or other cheap material used for the core. When the heel is secured to the shoe, the nails will pass through all the strips forming the covering for the core and through the lift B. The outer edge of this heel for the whole height is solid leather, and is to all appearances a solid leather heel, and, of course, will take as good a nish as a leather heel, though produced at a much l less cost.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A boot or shoe heel having a core of wood or material other than leather, with V-shaped grooves formed upon its periphery, and strips of leather, of suitable form, bent around and fitting into said grooves, with or without the finishing-lift B, substantially as described.
Executed at Boston this 24th day of Dccember, 1873.
