IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS AND-SHOES..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153, 3114, dated July 21,1874 application tiled May 2,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. JoYoE, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Irnprovement in Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying' drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this speciication, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of boots and shoes, the object being to protect the upper-leather at the toe and around the edge; and it consists in forming a channel around the sole, upon its inner side and near the edge, into which the upper is sunk, and the insole overlapping thev said channel.
A, Fig. 1, represents an outsole, around and near the edgeof which a channel, a, is formed,
leaving the center portion a the full thickness. The insole C and the upper B are prepared in substantially the usual manner to' receive the' outsole, and when the outsole is placed upon the insole the upper sinks into the channel, the insole overlapping the channel and causing it to do so. This protects the upperleather at the edge of the insole, and avoids the wear which comes upon the upper around the edge. The center portion of the sole is preserved its full thickness.
As represented in Fig. 3, for a double sole the middle sole is formed with a channel, a, and otherwise the combining of the soles and shoe is performed in the usual manner.
I claim as my invention- A boot or shoe having the sole of full thickness, except in the channel a, an upper sunk in said channel, and an insole overlapping the channel, as and for the purpose described.
