BOOT OR SHOE SOLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,152, dated January 10, 1882. Application filed April 8, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN D. S'IODDARD, of Oentreville, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Bottoms or Soles; and I do herebydeclarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention has for its objects to provide a sole-protector for boots and shoes which will impart increased firmness to the sole and render the same and the joint where it is united to the upper practically water-proof, and by which a more desirable wearing-surface for the bottom of the sole is also obtained.

A further object of the invention is to combine with the sole-protector a water-proof sole- ]ining or middle sole which will totally exclude water from the inner sole. These objects I attain by means of the devices hereinafter de-,

scribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the under side of a shoe with the outer sole drawn back Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.

A indicates the sole-protector, which is composed of metal, and which consists of a bed portion, a, made of a continuous flat strip having a series of perforations, a, through which the pins are passed in order to secure the same in place. This bed portion has a configuration corresponding with the outline of the sole B in front of the shank, and it is formed or provided with the two marginal flanges 0D, the

upper flange, 0, being designed to protect the upper, and the lower flange, D, being provided for the purpose of protecting the edge of the outer sole of the boot or shoe.

In applying my device I fit the outer sole, E, to the under side of the bed portion a of the protector, so that the edge of the sole will 'be embraced by the lower flange, D, and thereby be protected against wear. To the upper side of the said bed portion of the protector I apply a water proof intermediate sole or filling, d, which can be composed of rubber or of rubber cloth, and upon this water-proof filling I place the inner sole, F, having first turned under the same the edges of the upper in the usual way.

In order to secure the soles and the sole-protector together, I pass the metal pins or nails Gr through the outer sole, and also through the perforations in the bed-piece a, .the ends of said pins being then bent and clinched upon the upper face of the inner sole.

It will thus be seen that the protector eHect' ually excludes water and dirt from the joint between the sole and the upper, and that the upper is protected by one flange and the edge of the sole by the other flange of the device; also, that the sole will have additional firmness imparted to it, and that the water-proof filling totallyexcludes water from the inner sole, and enables me to make a perfect water-proof bottom to the shoewithout rendering it necessary to form the bed of the protector of a solid plate having a width equal to the width of the sole, which latter would render the boot or shoe too heavy, and also involve more expense.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- The combination, with the outer and the inner soles of a boot or shoe, of the metallic soleprotector composed of a bedplate, a, with upward and downward flanges, the pins for securing the sole-protector and the soles together, and the water-proof filling arranged between the inner sole and the metallic sole-protector, substantially as described.
