Description
(No Mode-1.) I v H. E. CLINTON.
HEEL FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Patented Feb. 21,1882.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. CLINTON, OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
HEEL FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,844, dated February 21, 1882.
. Application filed December 31,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. CLINTON, of Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heels for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the heel detached. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, showing the heel attached to a shoe. Fig. 4 is a section on line as m, Fig.
3; and Fig. 5 is a detail view, showing in perspective the plates which constitute my invention.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
Thisinvention relates to'an improved method of and means for securing or attaching heels detachably to boots and shoes, in order that they may be easily renewed or interchanged when completely or partly worn, as Will"loe hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a plate, of any suitable metal or other material, which is secured by means of nails, screws, or otherwise-to the upper side of a heel, B, upon which it is made to fit nicely, as shown. Plate A is provided on its under side with a centrally-located boss or enlargement, G,having ascrew-threaded opening, D. Openings or perforations E E are formed at the front corners (or at some other suitable places) of plate A, which said openings communicate with recesses F in the heel.
G is :Wfilate corresponding in size and shape toplate A, and secured or arranged in the shoe either between the outer and the insole or above the latter. Plate G is provided with down ward-projecting prongs H, located to correspond with the locationrof openings E in plate A. Said prongs pass through openings Iin the sole or soles, according to the location of plate G, through openings E in plate A, and into the recesses F in the heel. Plate G is also pro- "vided with a central perforation, J, corresponding with the threaded opening D in plate A, and the soles, which are represented by letters Kand L, have openings M, corresponding with openings D J in plates-A and G.
The heels are attached to the boots or shoes by screws S, inserted from the inside of the soles, as shown. To remove the heels for renewal, or in order to interchange them from one shoe to another, it is only necessary to remove the screws S.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with a boot or shoe havinga plate, G, arranged upon theinside of the outer sole and provided with perforation J and prongs H, of the heel having aplate, A, se-
cured to its upper side, said plate being provided with a boss, 0, countersunk in the heel, and having a threaded opening, D, to receive a fastening-screw, S, and openings E E to admit the prongs H, substantially asset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY E. CLINTON. Y
