JUSTIN B. SARGENT, OF WYEST LEBANON, NEXV HAMPSHIRE.
RUB
BER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,600, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed March 6, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JUSTIN B. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVest Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, whiclrform a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in over-shoes, and has for its object to so improve the construction thereof that all danger of slipping off at the heel will be avoided, without, however, preventing the overshoes from being easily removed when it is so desired and without adding to their cost of produc- .tion.
In order to produce an overshoe that will hold itself in position upon shoes without materiallyincreasing the weight or impairing in the least the contour or symmetry and neatness of appearance thereof, I have devised a simple and novel construction, consisting of the features and details more fully hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rubber overshoe embodying my invention, with the rear portion broken away to show the con- Serial No. 383.966. (N0 model.)
struction of the inside of the heel; Fig. 2, a detail perspective View, partly in section, looking into the heel of the overshoe.
In the drawings, A is the overshoe; B, the heel portion thereof; 0 D, supplemental strips made of rubber, flexible cloth, leather, or other suitable material, whieh are glped or otherwise attached to the inside of the back and sides and inside of the bottom of the heel of the overshoe. or suction chambers to therein, the purpose of which is as follows: When an overshoe constructed in accordance with my invention is placed on a shoe, the air-spaces a, coming in contact and pressing closely against the shoe, cause a suction to take place betweenthe said shoe and overshoe, and by this means the overshoe is held firmly thereon and prevented from slipping oft.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A rubber overshoe provided on its inner side at the counter and heel portions with thin strips of flexible material, said strips having open cut-out spaces which constitute air or suction chambers between the overshoe and the shoe of the wearer, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JUSTIN B. SARGENT.
