OVERSHOE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,817, dated May 21, 1889.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE O. WOLFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chippewa Falls, in the county of Chippewa and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to overshoes, and has for its object the provision of a shoe to supplant the ordinary rubber overshoe, and which can be readily repaired and more quickly adjusted and removed from the foot than the common gum shoe, and which will be light, ornamental, durable, and capable of giving a spring to the step. The heel and counter are made of metal and the sole is attached to a tang extending from the heel. The toe is likewise made of metal, and the upper, composed of two side pieces, is secured at its ends to the counter and the toe.

The improvement further consists of the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of an overshoe of my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal central section of the shoe; Fig. 3, a crossse ction on the line X X of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 perspective views of a modification showing the heel and counter in one piece and separate from the tang, the front side, and the bottom of the heel, which are formed in one piece. I

The heel A and counter B are made of metal, the heel being hollow and provided with the tang a, to which the sole 0 is secured. The heel, counter, and tang may be cast or formed of sheet metal pressed into the required shape; but for convenience of manufacture the tang a, the front side, a, and the bottom a of the heel are separate from the outer walls of the heel and the counter, and are secured to the heel in any wellknown manner. The piece D, of leather or cork, secured to the bottom of the heel, prevents jar to the foot.

The toe E is formed of metal and has an outer flange, e, at its lower edge by which it is fastened to the sole C by the nails e,which are driven through the said flange e.

The side pieces, F, forming the upper, are secured at their ends to the counter B and the toe E, respectively, and have their lower edges lasted in between the sole 0 and the insole G. The sole is re-enforced at its front end by the extra thickness of leather or cork O. The metal heel and counter and the too are lined with flannel or like material.

The shoe is held to the foot by the instepstrap g, which is fastened at one end to the counter, and having a fastening, h, at its other end, which is adapted to be engaged with the lug h on the other end of the counter. The sole and sides F are riveted to the counter, and the same rivet that fastens the sole 0 to the tang a also secures the insole G to the said tang.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the sole, the toe E, and the side pieces, F, of the metal heel and counter, the heel having a tang to which the sole is secured and the side pieces being fastened at their ends to the counter and toe, respectively, substantially as described.

2. The herein-described overshoe, composed of the following elements: the metal heel and counter having a tang, the sole and insole secured to the said tang, the sides F, fastened at their rear ends to the counter and having their lower edges lasted in between the sole and insole, the metal toe having an outer flange and secured to the sole by nails driven through the flange and fastened to the front ends of the said sides F, the soft lining applied to the heel-counter and the toe, the instep-strap, and the extra pieces applied to the heel and the sole, substantially as and for the purpose described.
