UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. RIEMER, OF MILWAUKEE, IVISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONF-I'IALF TO LOUIS F. RIEMER, OF SAME PLACE.
eooron SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,821, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed April 10,1899.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. RIEMER, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a descriptiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings,
.which are a part of this specification.
The chief object of my invention is to provide improved means in a boot'or shoe for protecting the feet of the wearer against dampness or wet coming through the sole or at the junction of the sole with the upper.
My invention relates to the improved construction of a boot or shoe, as herein described and claimed, or the equivalent thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of a shoe of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same improved shoe. Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of the sole of the same shoe, a portion of the sole being broken away to exhibit interior construction.
In, the drawings, 5 is the upper of a shoe, which upper may be of leather or any other material adapted for the uppers of boots or shoes and is made in the common form now soles may be made of any light, strong, and
firm wood, conveniently of basswood or whitewood. These soles are made to extend from the end of the toes to the rear of the heel and to a form that is adapted to properly fit the bottom of the foot of the wearer and to suitably support the heel and toes of the foot.
In the manufacture of the shoe or boot the insole 7 is placed on the last, and the upper is then drawn over the last, and its lower edge is turned inwardly against the outer (lower) surface of the insole 7 about the margin thereof, the flange or margin 8 of the upper being properly notched, so as to overlap and fold down closely to the insole. This margin 8 is then secured to the insole conveniently by nails 9, driven through the margin into the insole. The main or outer sole 6 on its upper surface is made to conform in general outline Serial No. 712,411. (No model.)
to the outer surface of the inso1e7 and is then placed on the margin 9 of the upper opposite the insole and is secured thereto at the rear part of the boot or shoe by screws 10 10, in= serted from the inside of the boot or shoe through the insole 7 into the sole 6. The front part of the sole 6 is secured to the shoe by means of screws 11 11, inserted through the sole 6 from the outside and turning into the insole 7. This construction connects the parts together securely and provides an airspace between the sole 6 and the insole 7 equal in thickness to the thickness of the margin 8 of the upper, against which the insole is placed on the inside, and the sole 6 is placed on the outside.
As a further protection against the admission of wet into the shoe, especially at the joint between the upper and the sole, I provide a dam or packing that consists of a noncorrodible metal wire 12, secured to the upper surface of the sole 6 by means of staples 13 13, the wire being located and extending around on the upper surface of the insole near its edge and in such position as to project therefrom against the upper 5 at the outer line of the junction of the upper with the sole 6. The wire is placed directly on the surface of the sole 6 and is secured so tightly thereto by the staples 13 that water cannot pass between the wire and the sole, and when the shoe is used the upper will be forced down so snugly against or about the wire as to prevent all water from passing over the wire between it and the upper.
What I claim as my invention is In a boot or shoe, the combination with a flexible upper turned under the edge and secured to an insole and a wood exterior sole secured thereto, of a'wire packing secured permanently to the upper surface of the exterior sole near the margin thereof and under and so as to contact with the upper.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. RIEMER.
