RUBBER BOOT OR SHOE.
$PECIPICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,407, dated September 16, 1884. I Application filed April 26, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN N. V. SWEET, of Nantucket, in the county of Nantucket and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a' described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings is illustrated a shoe made of india-rubber, and otherwise constructed according to this invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of the shoe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section at the heel. Fig. 3 is a face View of the bottom of the heel. Fig. 4 is aview similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification; and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, to be hereinafter referred to.
In thedrawings, A represents a shoe consisting of the upper B, sole 0, and heel D, all made of india-rubber in any of the usual and well-known Ways of manufacturing india-rnbber boots and shoes, and needing no particular description herein, except so far as this in vention is concerned.
The outer or treading surface, E, of the heel D of the shoe has a central projection, F preferably round in horizontal section.
G is a piece or sheet of leather of the shape and outline of the treading face of the heel, and having an opening, H, in its central portion, corresponding in its form, &c., with the projection F of the heel. This leather piece G is placed on the treading face E of the heel D, the central. projection, F, of. the heel extending into the opening H of the leather, and having its outer surface a slightly projecting or flush, or substantially so, with the outer surface I) of "the leather piece G, and secured in the following manner: In the inside of the shoe, at the portion J overthe heel D, is
placed a piece of leather, K, fitting. the surfaceL of the shoe at such place. With this piece K in place, and the leatherpiece G applied to the outer piece of the heel, as described, pegs, nails, or tacks M are driven from the outside of the leather piece Gthrough it, the rubber heel D, and inside leather piece K, where they are clinched, or not, as desired, thus securing the leather piece G firmly and rigidly to the heel of the shoe, as is obvious. The projection'F and corresponding opening in the piece G can be of any desired form in horizontal section, and can be at any place in the heel, and more than one, if desired; also, the leather piece can be secured to the heel in other ways than by nails or pegsas, for instance, rivets, or other similar fastenings, or by stitches, or by cement, or any suitable adit not being intended to limit the invention to any particular way of securing the leather piece G to the heel.
The use of leather for the outside or treading or wearing surface of the heel of a boot or shoe made of india-rubber prevents the heel from wearing away too fast and before the other parts of the boot or shoe become worn, as is often the case where the treading-surface of the heel is of rubber and exposed to wear. Also, having a portion of the treading-surface of such piece G of rubber gives a treading-surface sufficient for the necessary friction to prevent slipping of the shoe when worn, and yet does not retract from the effect resulting from the application of the leather piece, as ordinarily the principal wear of the heel comes upon or near the edges of the heel, and not at the central portion, where it is preferable to have the rubber exposed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isr A rubber boot or shoe havinga piece or sheet of leather secured to the outer or treading surface of its heel, having an opening, H, through which extends a portion or projection, F, of the rubber heel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN N. V. SWEET.
