VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED A. BROOKS, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE SOLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,791, dated July 10, 1883.
Amlic tion filed April 4, 1883. (Numodcl.)
To wZZwh/om it may concern:
-Beit known that I, ALFRED A. BROOKS, of Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Boots or Shoes, f which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a strong and durable sole 'the central tread-surface of which is composed of indiarubber; and my invention consists, essentially, in' a ilanged or shouldered solle entread part, composedf indiwlbber, surrounded externally below the saidtshoulder with an edgewearing-surface of leather, as will be described. In this instance my invention is shown as embodied in a tap-sole.
Figure l represents an under side View of a tap-sole embodyingy my invention; Fig. 2, a
` longitudinal section thereof on the line xx,
Fig. l.; and Figure Bis a perspective View of the india-rubber part with the surrounding wearing-surface removed.
The treadlpartiAand the. flange b are integral, being composed of a'single piece of cast or moldedixndialrubber, themflange b being eX- tended outwardly about theucentral part of it in all direetiofis far enoughto form ashoulder, d, and horizontal projection to receive the surrounding edge wearing-surface of leather C,
(shown only in Figs. 1 and 2,) the said surface of leather serving as the edge to receive blows against stones Sto.
In use, the central part, A, rests with its flat or corrugated face against the pavement or earth. The rubber angejplies above the leather C, and preventsdampness from passing upward through the latter.
I do not broadly claim a sole made up of a central portion and edge ofV a different material 5 but I am not awarethatarilanged sole or tread surface or portion has, ever been made from india-rubber` as a singlel piece and surrounded by a leather rim.` Nails, stitches, or 45 other fastenings inserted through the leather l rim will penetrate the flange b.
As an improved article of manufacture, a sole having a central tread-surface of rubber, provided at its edge with a shouldered flange, and having an edge wearing-surface of leather, held in place by the said flange, all substantially as shown and described. Y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name 5 5 to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED A. RRooRs.
