Be it known that I, JOHN W. BADDOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boot-Heels and Protectors Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved protector for the heels of boots and shoes, the same being adapted to be molded in a heel of plastic material, such as rubber, and equally applicable either to a top lift formed of plastic material or to a heel molded entirely of rubber or other plastic material.

The object of the invention is to provide a protector which will add to the wearing qualities of the heel, will act as an anti-slipping device and which will be so constructed and molded as to be securely attached thereto in such a manner as to prevent the same from becoming detached from said heel or lift when the same is worn.

The invention consists in a protector for a heel of plastic material formed and constructed as hereinafter described and particularly as pointed out in the claims.

The invention further consists in the combination of a protector such as hereinafter described with a heel of plastic material or with a top lift of plastic material for the heel of a boot or shoe, as particularly set forth in the following specification and in the claims thereof.

Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of my improved protector. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a section, partly in elevation taken on line 3 3, Fig. 4, of a boot heel showing` the same attached to a portion of a boot, with my improved protector shown in connection with said heel in elevation. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a heel showing my improved protector molded therein. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of a boot heel showing a modified form of my protector attached thereto.

ln the drawings, referring to Figs. 1 to 4, 7 is a protector formed in accordance with my invention of a piece of wire bent to form a series of U-shaped loops, said loops extending alternately, transversely and longitudi- The transverse loops S, 8 project at their closed ends 9, 9

through the tread of the top lift 10 of the heel 11. The longitudinal loops 12, 12 serve to connect the transverse loops together and projecting downwardly into the top lift form at their closed ends 18, 13 positive locks in the plastic material of the top lift 10 to prevent the protector from being detached therefrom. The opposite ends of the wire forming the protector are bent laterally thereof to form hook- sha ed eyes 14, 14, said eyes being preferably e ongated longitudinally of the protector for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

The protector is molded in the plastic material forming the top lift 10 or in the plastic material which may form the entire heel, the same being illustrated in Fig. 3 as molded in the top lift and attached to the body portion of the heel 11 by means of nails 15, 15 which extend through the eyes 14, 14 and projecting downwardly through the top lift into the body portion of the heel are clenched thereto in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. it will be seen that the closed ends 9, 9 of the protector form a series of metallic protectors upon the tread of the heel or lift, said closed protecting ends being arranged radially upon the heel, as illustrated in Fig. 4.

After the shoe has been worn sufficiently to wear off the closed ends 9, 9 the legs of the U-shaped loops S, 8 project through the tread of the heel and continue to provide a pr'otective as well as a non-slipping surface for the tread of the heel. The eyes 14, 14 are elongated to form slots in order that the protector may fit different sized heels and the nails 15, 15 be driven in a heel nailing machine with said nails 15, 15 diHerent distances a art for several different sizes of shoes anc still passing through the slots in the eyes 14, 14. The eyes 14, 14 further provide a suitable means for supporting the protector uponthe pins which are in the mold in Whichtlie heel or top lift is molded, so that said protector is formed in such a manner as to be practicable in use and also in the manufacture of a molded heel in which it is necessary that the protector should be supported upon pins or some equivalent device in the mold preparatory to the molding of the heel.

In Fig. 5 another modification of my invention is illustrated in which the protector 7 2 is formed of a series of loops all extending longitudinally of the protector and the wire forming said loops is bent at its opposite ends to form eyes 142, 142. This form of my invention is molded in the top lift 102 and attached by means of nails 152 152 to the ybody porticn of the heel.

The different forms of my invention hereinbefore set forth are similar in that they are adapted to be molded in a heel or `top lift vof plastic material and when so molded are locked therein by projecting hooks or the like, said hooks being preferably eye-shaped to receive nails by means of which the protector is secured to the top lift and the top lift secured to the heel.

It is evident that the holes may be left out of the ears or lateral projections in the forms of my invention liereinbefore set forth Witl out departing from the spirit of my invention, these ears still performing the function of locking instrumentalities to prevent the projzector from becoming detached from the hee Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:

1. A protector for a heel of plastic material, consisting of a Wire bent to form a series of loops and adapted to be molded in said heel with said loops substantially at right angles to the tread of said heel, the

'closed ends of said loops Valternately projecting through the tread of said heel 4and embedded therein to form locks.

2. A protector for -a heel or top lift of plastic material consisting of a Wire bent to form a series of loops and adapted to be molded in said heel, the opposite ends of said Wire :bent laterally of said protector to j j form eyes.

3. A heel for a boot or shoe formed of plastic material and a Wire protector molded therein, said protector bent to form a series of loops, the closed ends of said loops alternately projecting through the tread of said heel and embedded therein to form locks.

4. A ,heel for a boot or shoe formed of plastic material and a Wire protector molded therein, said protector bent to form a series of loops, the closed ends, of said loo s alternately projecting through the trear of said heel and embedded therein to form locks, said Wire bent laterally at its opposite ends to form eyes.

5. A heel for a boot or shoe .having a top lift of plastic material, and a Wire protector molded therein said rotector bent to form a series of loops the c osed ends of said loops alternately vprojecting through the tread of said heel and embedded therein, said Wire bent laterally at its opposite ends to forni eye-shaped hooks, and nails projecting through said eyes and from said top lift into the body portion of said heel, whereby said top lift is fastened to said heel body portion.

6. A heel for a boot or shoe formed of plastic material and a Wire protector molded therein, saidI protector bent to form a series of loops extending alternately,transversely and longitudinally of said protector, the closed ends of said-loops projecting .alternately through the tread of said heel and embedded therein to form locks.

7. A .heel for a boot or shoe having a top lift of plastic material and a Wire protector molded therein, said protector bent to form a series of loops extending alternately, transversely and longitudinally of said protector, the closed ends kof said loops projecting alternately through the tread of said heel and embedded therein to form loclis, the opposite ends of said Wire bent laterally to form eye-shaped hooks, 4and nails projectin g through said eyes and from said top lift into the body portion of said heel, whereby said top lift is fastened to said heel body portion.

S. A protector for a heel or top lift ofv plastic material consisting of a piece of metal bent to form a series of loops and adapted to be mold-ed in said heel, the opposite ends of said piece of metal bent laterally thereof and each of said ends having a hole extending therethrough lto form eyes.

9. A protector for a heel or top :liftV of plastic material consisting of a piece of metal bent to form a series of loops and adapted to be molded in said heel, the op osite ends of said piece of metal bent l-atera ly thereof to form locking projections Within said heel.
