GAP OR COVERING FOR BOOT 0R SHOE HEELS.- No. 257,377. Patented May 2,1882,
' WITNESSES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. PEAY, OF UALHOUNJKENTUOKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JEPTHA G. JONSON, OF SAME PLACE.
CAP OR COVERING FOR BOOT OR SHOE HEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,377, dated May 2, 1882.
Application filed February 25, 1882, (No model.)
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, WrLLIAM A. PEAY, of Calhoun, in the county of McLean and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps or Coverings for the Heels of Boots or Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which to it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved heel-cup. Fig. 2 is a perspective view [5 of the fastener used in connection with the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showingthe cap and fastener in position upon the heel of a boot.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improved ca p or covering for the heels of boots and'shocs, to be made of india-rnbber, and provided with suitable means for securing it detachably in position; and it consists in the construction of the same and the means of attaching it, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. 7
In the drawings hereto annexed, A repre- 0 sents my improved heel-cap, which is made, as stated, of india-rubber, or of rubber and cloth combined, or of any other suitable material, and of suitable size and shape to lit the heel upon which it is to be worn. It is also pro- 3 vided with an upward-projectin g collar, B, fitting around the back of the boot or shoe and extending a short distance above the heel. Upon the inside of the collar B are secured suitably-constructed buttons 0 0.
0 D is a metallic plate, constructed mainly like the ordinary well-known heel-stiffeners, and secured in like manner to the sides of the heel,
one on each side, by means of screws .13 or other suitable fastenings. The upper ends of the plates D,'\vhich, as shown, extend above 5 the heels, are made slightly outwardly bulging and provided with T- shaped slots F. When the cap A has been placed in position upon the heel, over which it should be made to fit tightly, the buttons 0 are adjusted in the slots F of the plates D, thus securing the cap firmly in position.
The advantagesof my invention will be readily understood. When the cap is detached the plates I) save the heels from being worn unevenly or run down. With the cap in position for indoor wear injury to floors and car"- pets by the heel-plates is prevented, as well as to the legs of the pantaloons and other garments. Another important advantage is that it will deaden the-noise of the heels upon uncovered floors, thus preventing much annoy ance, especially in school-rooms and other places where many people are gathered. This last object is attained without keeping the feet heated to an unhealthy degree, as is the case when overshoes are worn.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The plates D suitably secured upon the sides of the heel of a boot or shoe, and having T- shaped slots F, in combination with the herein-described heel cap or covering A, having collar 13, provided with buttons 0. substan- 7's tially as and for the purpose herein shown Mu. specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. PEAY.
Witnesses:
