Description
A. J; MosHEln STAYS FOR THE SEAMS OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
N. 194,972, Patented Sept.11,1877.
UNITED STATES ANDREW J MOSHER,
n'rEN'r OFFICE.
0E DEEE-ING, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAVS FOR THE SEAMS OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,972, dated September 11, 18717; application filed i June 14, 1877.
Toall 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. MosHER, of Deering, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stays for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Whichl Figure l is a top view of my improved stay. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same; and Fig. 3 a sectional view, showing the stay as applied to a seam.
In the manufacture of boots and shoes, especially of ladies7 boots, it is found necessary to stay the seams for the purpose of strengthening them and giving a better nish to the boot or shoe. Ordinarily, this has been done by sewing over the seam to be stayed a iiat piece of leather, stitched by one or more rows of stitches on either side of the seam. The stay so formed and applied presents an even surface externally, and the stitches by which itis held in place are thus exposed to Wear from contact with the garments. rlhe stitches are thus often so abraded as to break, releasing the stay upon one or bpth sides, and rendering it useless as means of strengthening the seam or as a finish to the boot.
My improvement consists in making the stay of two pieces, substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
a represents a strip of kid, the edges of which may or may not be turned in, as greater or less finish is desired, and b a piece of leather f width sufficient to cover completely the seam to be stayed. The piece b is firmly pasted or cemented -to the center of the under side of the strip of kid, which is pressed down upon, and made to conform to the shape of the pieceb, as seen in Fig. 2.
The method of applying the stay is shown in Fig. 3. The stay is placed over the seam, the center of the piece b being over the center of the seam, and in this position is stitched to the boot by tWo rows of stitches, one on either side of the piece b, and as near to it as may be without, however, passing through it.
. With a stay thus constructed and applied, it will be perceived that the stitches are protected by the projecting shoulders formed by the piece b from all contactwith the garments of the wearer.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
An improved stay for covering and staying the seams of `boots and shoes, consisting of the outer stay-piece a and the inner central longitudinal strip b, combined substantially as shown, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of June, 187 7 ANDREW J. MOSHER.
Witnesses:
