W. WATKINS.
SHOE. v No. 311,275. Patented Jail. 27, 1885.
WITNESSES INVENTOR m'zzmm Wk/nx By flttorney yo M G/. U I
IINrTE STATES ATENT WILLIAM WATKINS, OF LINNEUS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARDEN MORTON.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 311,275, dated January 27, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WATKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linneus, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather Shoes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apro pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shoes of that class which are made from a single piece of stock; and it consists in the peculiar combinations and the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View of my improved pattern. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the shoe complete.
A represents a complete seamless shoe-upper, and B the sole of the shoe. E is the button-hole flap, which is secured to the upper A, as indicated. a d 6 indicate the edges of the upper A and the flap E, betweenwhich 0 the only seam appears.
It will be observed that by my construction I avoid the usual seams, which are obj ectionable, as they frequently rip, and thus detract from the beauty of the shoe, and they also 5 bruise the foot.
It will be seen that the only seam is that at the back of the shoe, extending from a: to 1, or the length of the seam d, corresponding in length with the combined lengths of the two edges 0 e.
The flap E is designed to fold around the 0 ankle at the back of the shoe and fasten upon the inside. The advantage of this construction will be apparent, for by putting the right foot on the left knee to fasten it the operator will have perfect access to the buttons of the 5 upper, and by reversing the feet the same access is acquired with the left foot.
Besides the convenience of fastening, a more perfect fit in the shoe is obtained.
The upper is provided with buttons, and button-holes are made in the flap E, as indicated in the drawings.
I do not claim, broadly, a shoe made from a single piece of stock, as I am aware that such, broadly, is not new; but
What I do claim as my invention is In an improved boot or shoe, the upper A, of a single piece of stock, provided with fastenings upon one edge, and with the closing flap E upon its opposite edge, adapted to fold 60 around the ankle at the back of the shoe and fasten upon the inside, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM WATKINS.
