A. M. BARBER.
SAW FRAME. No. 342,560. Patented May 25; 1886.
UNITED STATES Erica.
ATENT ADIN MAYO BARBER, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR 'TO THE DIAMOND SAW COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SAW-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,560, dated May, 25, 1886,
Application filed August 28, 1885. Serial No. 175,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADIN MAYO BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State 5 of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1 which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in saw-frames for adjusting the saw within said frame at any desired angle, and also to frames wherein saws of different lengths may be secured with equal facility; and my invention consists in the combination, with an ordinary back piece or bow provided with cylindrical sockets, of holder and draw-bolt formed to fit in such sockets, and an adjusting and locking 2O nut interposed between one end of the bow and the tightening-screw.
It also consists in other details of construction, hereinafter described, and specified in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure -1 represents a side view of the frame with our improved mechanism attached. Fig. 2 is a section through the handle and stock; and Fig. 3 is a detail View of the lock-nut.
A is the bow or back of the frame, provided with a cylindrical socket at one end and a countersunk socket at the other, and with a stud or projection, a.
b is a holder beveled to fit in the cauntersunk socket, having the usual slot and hole for coupling the saw therewith.
b is a threaded draw-bolt, by which the saw is tightened by any suitable nut. This is made to fit and turn freely in the cylindrical socket 40 of the frame. It is preferably of considerable length and made fiat on one or more sides. A milled locking-nut, c, is fitted on this draw bolt b, to slide freely without turning thereon. In this instance I attach the tightening-nut O to and make it the ferrule of the handle, the stem or extension of the draw-bolt entering and extending into the handle.
The saw is tightened in the usual way by the tightening-nut O, and because of the long stem, which may extend in the line of the saw between the sockets to a considerable distance, saws of materially different lengths may be in- (No model.)
serted, thus providing for the utilization of pieces of broken saw. The tension which the draw-bolt exerts on the holder b produces friction enough to prevent its turning when the saw is being used.
In order to secure and adj net the saw at any desired angle with relation to the plane ofthe frame, the tightening-nut O is first loosened. The nut c is then withdrawn from the pin a. By turning the locking-nut the saw is set at any desired angle, after which it is moved forward until the pin a enters the hole which is opposite to it. The handle carrying the tightening-screw is then turned and the parts are drawn tightly together.
To adjust a short saw or a piece of a saw, the handle'is turned till the draw-bar ext-ends within the frame far enough to be fastened to the saw. v
It is observed that the part B serves as a handle for operating both the saw and the tightening-nut.
I am aware that it is not new to provide means for adjusting the saw at different angles with the plane of the frame. I do not, therefore, broadly claim the same as my invention; but
\Vhat I do claim is 1. In a saw-frame having means for adj usting the saw to any desired angle with the plane of the frame, the combination, with the bow having a countersunk socket at one end and a cylindrical socket at the other, of the holder having a conical head, the draw-bar, and a locking-nut to retain the saw in the desired position, substantially as described.
2. In a saw-frame having means for adj usting the saw to any angle, the combination, with the bow provided with the stud a, of an extension draw-bar having a screw-thread extending from its outer end to the point of attachmcnt of the saw, a locking-nut to hold said draw-bar from turning, and a hollow handle within which the extensible draw-bar is inoased, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADIN MAYO BARBER.
