Description

March 13, 1928.
c. HENNECK TOOL HANDLE FASTENING Filed Sept. 25. 1926 In-ventor' Attorney Patented Mar. 13, 1928.
UNITED STATES CONRAD HENNEGK, OF FRISCO, COLORADO.
TOOL-HANDLE rascrnnmo.
Application filed September 25, 1926. Serial No. 137,698.
This invention relates generally to tools and has more particular reference to means to facilitate the attachment of the tools to the handle and the primary object thereof resides in the provision of such means that will enable a broken tool to be replaced by a new tool without necessitating the discarding of the handle or that will enable a broken handle to be replaced by a new handle without necessitating the discarding of the tool which is now the case by reason of the form of fastening now generally in use.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in View as the nature of the invention will be better understood the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in both of the views Figure 1 is a view of a tool and handle interconnected by fastening means st-ructed in accordance with the present invention, said fastening means being disclosed in cross-section, and
Figure 2 is an elevation of the handle and tool in separated condition.
Now having particular reference to the drawing 5 designates a tool handle of conventional construction, while 6 designates a tool which in the present instance is shown as being a shovel. In carrying out my invention the tool is formed with a shank 7 the inner end of which is reduced and externally screw threaded as at 8. Arranged over the tool end of the handle 5 is a relatively elongated sheet metal sleeve 9 that is formed inwardly out of the tool attaching end with a wall 10 that abuts the end of the handle 5 so as to permit the securing of the handle to the wall by reason of a wood screw 11. The said end of the sleeve 9 outwardly of the wall 10 is internally threaded for receiving the threaded reduced extension 8 of the tool shank 7.
con-' Afterthe sleeve 9 has been arranged upon the handle and secured thereto by reason of the wood screw 11 there is arranged transversely through the inner end of the sleeve and said handle a bolt 12 upon the threaded end of which is arranged a nut 13.
It will thus be seen that should the tool. or handle become bro-ken in the first event the toolfcould be readily removed by unscrewing! the same from the sleeve 9 and a new tool substituted in lieu thereof. On the other hand should the handle become broken it would only be necessary to remove the bolt 12 and the screw 11 and a new handle associated with the sleeve and then attached thereto by reason of said screw and said bolt.
Even though I have herein shown and de scribed the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that some changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit or scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
In a tool handle fastening of the class described, wherein the tool is provided with a reduced externally threaded extension on the outer end of its shank, an elongated sleeve constructed for slidable engagement over the tool end of the handle, a transverse wall formed in the sleeve adjacent its outer end for abutting engagement with the inner end of the tool handle, a screw extending centrally through the wall into the adjacent end of the tool handle, the outer end of the sleeve being internally threaded for receiving the externally threaded reduced cxteir' sion formed on the shank of the tool, the outer end of said reduced extension abutting the inner side of said transverse wall, and a boltextending transversely through the inner end of the sleeve and the adjacent portion of the handle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CONRAD HENNECK.
