OLIVER NJ I-IOWERTON, 0F PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-KNOB FASTENER.
Application filed June 19, 1912. Serial No. 704,618.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, OLIVER N. HowER'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Knob Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to fasteners, and more particularly to the classof door knob fasteners.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fastener wherein a door knob -may be securely held upon the turning spindle of a look when mounted within a door so that there will be no possibility of the knob becoming loose or detached from the spindle irrespective of its use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character which is mounted within the spindle of a lock whereby the knob may be securely fastened thereto, the fastener being adjustable in the spindle to lengthen or shorten the same according to the width of a door.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener which simplifies the removal'from or the placing of a knob upon the spindle of a door lock and also will avoid the possibility ofthe loss of the fastener should the knob be removed therefrom or when mounted thereon.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener which is simple in construction, reliable and efiicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a lock spindle showing the door knob mounted thereon with the fastener constructed in accordance with the invention securing the latter thereto. Fig. 2 I
is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener removed from the spindle.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 19 13.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing by numerals 5 designates a portion of a spindle of an ordinary door lock, the said spindle being of squared formation in cross section throughout its extent, and is of the ordinary wellknown construction having spaced transversely extending apertures or holes 6 for the adjustable connection of the stem 7 of a door knob 8, which is of the usual type, the stem being socketed for receiving the shank or spindle 5 as usual.
The holes or apertures 6 in the spindle 5 are formed with internal screw threads 9' in which is detachably and adjustably engaged a knob fastener 10 the same being reduced at one end to form a securing lug 11 while its opposite larger end is externally threaded corresponding to the threads 9 of the holes 6 for the adjustable and detachable mounting of the fastener in any one of the same, the lug 11 being designed to engage in a hole 12 formed in one side of the stem 7 for the securing of the same upon the shank or spindle as shown.
The holes or apertures are formed with internal annular shoulders 13 with which the larger end of the fastener 10 abuts, so as to prevent the working out of the said fastener from the hole in which the same is engaged when turning the said fastener in one direction, that is to say for the securing of the stem 7 upon the spindle of the lock.
Formed in the outer face of the reduced end forming the lug 11 of the fastener is a screw driver receiving groove 14 whereby a screw driver may be engaged with the fastener for the turning of the same to enable the stem 7 to be fastened upon the spindle or removed therefrom.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is The combination with a lock spindle having an enlarged threaded recess and a restricted aperture opening through one side thereof and forming an intervening shoulder therebetween, and a knob having its shank provided With an opening registering With said aperture, of a fastener comprising fitted Within said opening of the shank of 10 the knob as described.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
OLIVER N. HOWERTON.
an enlarged lower portion threadedly adlVitnesses: justable in the recess of said spindle and a Joe. H. FoRs'roN, reduced upper portion adapted to be snugly J. A. CLARK.
