Application December 26, 1933, Serial No. '703,986
2 Claims. (Cl. 2-181) My invention relates to a sweat band for hats and has for its principal objects, to generally improve upon and simplify the construction of the existing forms of sweat bands and to provide a relatively simple, practical and inexpensive sweat band that may be readily applied to the hat body and which band is constructed and attached to the hat body so as to eiectually prevent perspiration and oil from passing outwardly from the sweat band through the body of the hat and discoloring the external surface thereof and the hat band that is generally positioned on the outer portion of the hat crown directly opposite to the sweat band.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a sweat band for hats that is constructed so that when properly applied to the hat it will not form a rib or projecting portion at the point where the sweat band is secured to the hat crown. This application is a substitute for the abandoned application filed November 18, 1930, Serial No. 496,405.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features jof construction and arrangement of parts that will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional perspective view of a sweat iband constructed in accordance with my invention.
2 is a sectional perspective view of my improved sweat band in proper position within the crown of a hat.
Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective, showing a modied construction of my improved sweat band.
Fig. 4 is a sectional perspective view showing a further modified construction.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, l0 designates a strip or band of leather of sufficient length to extend around the inside of the lower portion of a hat crown to serve as the sweat band therefor and' the lower inner portion of this band is skived so as to provide an inclined face 11 and the body of the band adjacent to this skived portion gradually decreases in width toward its lower edge.
The entire inner face of the band or that face that lies next to the body of the hat when theband is properly positioned therein, is suitably treated so as to render said surface moisture and oil proof.
In applying the band to the body of the hat, said band is turned upside down and the skived edge of said band is positioned against the in ner face of the lower portion of the hat crown so that approximately one-half the skived portion of the band extends upwardly on the inside of the hat crown above the brim, as illustrated 50 by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
A row of stitching such as 12 passes through the hat crown and the skived portion of the band at a point just above the point where the hat brim joins the hat body and the skived face 11 is now coated with a suitable adhesive, after which the body of the sweat band is folded upwardly into the crown of the hat so that it lies immediately against the inner face of the lower portion of the hat crown, as illustrated by solid lines in Fig. 2.
Thus the skived or tapered lower portion of the sweat band is bent double with the bend positioned adjacent to the point where the hat brim extends outwardly from the hat body and as the skived portion of the band gradually decreases in thickness toward the lower edge of the band the two layers of the skved portion equal the width of the main body of the sweat band and thus the uniform thickness of the sweat band is preserved and no rib or bead is formed at the lower portion of said band or at the point where the same is secured to the hat body.
Where such construction is employed, the stitching that connects the sweet band to the hat body, extends through the hat body, the upturned tapered portion of the sweet band and the upturned layer of the doubled portion of the insert 14, so that the outer layer of the doubled portion of the insert overlies the stitches and thereby prevents moisture and perspiration from passing through and along said stitches by capillary attraction, to the exterior of the hat body and the band B.
If desired the skived portion of the sweet band may be tooled lengthwise at an intermediate point to insure the correct line on which the skived portion of the band is folded.
The sweet band may be attached to the hat body with a row of machine stitching or it may be tacked by band sewing and if the latter method of attachment is carried out the sweet band may be readily removed and replaced when the hat is cleaned.
By coating the skived surface of the band with an adhesive, which softens under a mild degree of heat, the heating of such adhesive and the consequent sealing may be effected at the time the hat is blocked.
Inasmuch as the exposed surface of the hat band, when applied for use is finished in the usual manner, the band or turn at the lower edge of said band may be formed so as to produce a soft rounded edge that offers no discomfort to the wearer.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a sweat band for hats that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, capable of being easily and quickly applied for use and which sweat band is effective in preventing perspiration and moisture from passing through the hat crown to the exterior thereof.
A particularly desirable feature of my invention is the construction whereby the formation of a rib or bulge is formedV at the point where the sweat band is secured to the hat body and the preserving of the smooth, straight inner face of the sweat band provides comfort to the wearer of the hat equipped with my improved sweat band.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of* my improved sweat band may be Inade and substituted for those herein shown and described Without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a hat body, of a sweat band having a skived lower portion that is folded double along an intermediate longitudinally disposed line, the thickness of the doubled skved portion of said band being substantially equal to the thickness of the upper portion of the band and a row of stitching passing only through the thinner` layer of the skived portion and through the hat body.
2. The combination with a hat body, of a hat band having a skived lower portion that is bent double along an intermediate longitudinally disposed line to form tWo layers, the combined thickness of which is substantially equal to the thickness of the upper portion of the band, a strip of flexible oil and moisture proof material positioned between the sweat band and the hat body with the lower portion of said strip positioned between the layers of the skived portion of the band and fastening means passing only through said flexible strip, the thinner layer of the skived portion of the band and the wall of the hat body.
