@MAGS ERNESTYE. HODSHON, OF NULEY, NEVI JERSEY.
HAT.
Application filed April 17, 1923.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, lnNnsr E. lloosnon, a citizen of the `United States, and resident of Nutley. in the county of lisser; and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats, of which the following is a specification.
Soft felt hats as heretofore constructed have been provided with an interior soft leather band or binding which is called a sweat band. This sweat band is attached to the hat at the lower edge of the. crown, where the crown meets the brim, by stitches which do not pass entirely through the felt.
These stitches are lightly caught lin the felt l and pass only part way through it. rllhe upper edgeof this sweat band is loose or free so that the sweat band does not serve as a stiffening or supporting means for the body of the hat. rhese soft felt hats are also provided enteriorly with a ribbon which is called the hat band. This ribbon is tacked or stitched to the hat at separated points along the lower edge of the hat band. 'lhese stitches which tack the hat band to the hat pass entirely through the felt. The upper edge of the hat band is free, that is to say is not stitched to the hat. In some hats the bands are lightly stitched to the body of the hat at separated points along the upper edge of the hat band but this is not the usual practice. rThe result is that the hat band does not serve as a stil-lening or shaping means for the hat and the upper edge of the hat band is loose and serves as a dust and dirt catcher.
It is one of the principal objects of this invention to provide a soft felt hat with a reinforcing strip or band of material at the base of the crown and extending entirely around the crown, said material being of such a character that it may be intimately united with the felt and closely and permanently adhere thereto. rlhe lower edge of this reinforcing band is arranged at a point where the hat crown joins the brim and is extended up on the hat body a suitable distance. This reinforcing strip braces the hat body and serves as a means for keeping the hat in shape. The crowns of soft felt hats are frequently depressed and crushed and forced out of shape, The reinforcing band of this invention assists materially in preventing the distortion of the hat while at the same time preserving its softness and flexibility.
Serial No. 632,703.
Another object of the invention is to form the reinforcing band of some material which may be rendered adhesive and to secure the hat band or ribbon in place by forcing` it into intimate contact with it. The reinforcing band is preferably as wide as the ribbon so that the ribbon will be permanently secured to the hat body throughout its entire length and width. By this means the use of the securing threads which pass through the ribbon and through the' felt body along the lower edge of the ribbon are avoided. ly avoiding the use of these at; taching threads the hat body is not perfoaround the lower edge of the band. By causing the ribbon to adhere to the reinforcingl band throughout its entire width the ribbon serves as a reinforcing means for the hat body; and as the upper edge of the ribbon is permanently and closely attached to the hat body it will be impossible for dirt and dust to collect between the ribbon or band and the hat body.
ln the drawings llig. l is a perspective view of a hat showin@ the invention partly applied thereto; l
llig. 2a vertical sectional view of a hat showing the invention applied thereto; and 3 a partial sectional view of a hat on a large scale showing the reinforcing band and the hat ribbon applied thereto. i Referring to the various parts by numerals, l designates the crown or body of a soft felt hat; 2 the usual sweat band secured therein by stitches 3. said stitches being arranged along the lower edge of the sweat band and passing only partly through the felt body of the hat. I
Around the body of the hat at the base of the crown is secured a reinforcing band 4t. This band is secured to the exterior of the hat and extends entirely around it and is intimately attached to the hat. This reinforcing band may be of any suitable material which will closely adhere to the felt. It may be of any suitable width and extend as high up on the crown or body of the hat as may be desired. Preferably this reinforcing band is made of a suitable form of rubber Vgum or other similar material." illhen rubber gum is used it is caused to adhere to the felt by steaming or otherwise heating and pressing it into close and smooth contact with the hat. This rubber adhesive is water proof, smoothly secured so that it is unnecessary to stitch or otherwise fasten it in place;
materially assists in shaping the hat in that here closely and intimately with the reinforcing band. The hat ribbon is preferably as wide as the reinforcing band and is intimately and permanently attached to the hat throughout its entire width and entirely around the hat. By this means it is unnecessary to use threads or other fastening means forV securing the ribbon in place. It is smoothly and permanently attached to the hat and there is no pocket between the ribbon and the hat. When the reinforcing band is of rubber gum the ribbon may be caused toclosely adhere to it by the application of heat and pressure. It is manifest that the ribbon will be secured in position by means ofa water and grease proof reinforcing band and that therefore it will not be stained by moisture and grease from the interior of the hat. Furthermore the hat ribbon will serve as an Vadditional means for retaining the shape of thehat and preventing its distortion. y Y
What I claim is:
1. A hat provided with a flexible, waterproof reinforcing band adhering to the exterior of the hat and running around the base of the crown thereof, the lower edge of this band extending to the junction of the brim and the bod and a hat ribbon adhering to said rein orcing band substantially throughout the width of the ribbon, said band and ribbon when thus connected together and to the hat body serving to still'en the body and to protect the hat band against sweat.
2. The combination of a soft felt hat, a reinforcing flexible, adhesive, water-proof band secured to the exterior of the hat and extending entirely around the crown or body thereof at the lower end of said body, and a hat ribbon secured to said adhesive reinforcing band, said ribbon being intimately united with said reinforcing band throughout the entire length and width of said ribbon.
3. The combination of a felt hat, a reinforcing flexible water-proof band secured to the exterior of the hat and extending entirely around the crown or body thereof at the lower end of said body, and a hat ribbon overlying the reinforcing band, the said band being approximately the same width as the ribbon and being of a material adapted to be rendered adhesive by the a plication of heat to the exterior of the rib on to intimately unite the band with the ribbon and with the hat to thereby reinforce and slightly stiffen the hat body and maintain its correct head size and to prevent moisture passing through the hat to the ribbon.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my signature.
