v1: Tm

. GAP.

Specification f etrslatent. Patcgntgdl July JILL T916.

Application filed April 8, 1916. Serial No. 89,925.

To all whom it may concern: 1

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. KRoMEn, Jr.; a citizen of the United States, residing at South Kaukauna, in the county of Outagamie and'State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in caps or hats used by locomotive engineers, machinists and others and is the same subject-matter that was embodied in a formerly allowed, forfeited and abandoned application which was filed by me on May 13, 1909, allowed September 12, 1911, and identified by Serial No. 495,608.

The object of the invention is to provide a cap of this character which is constructed entirely of fabric so that it may be repeatedly washed and easily kept in a sanitary condition and which has a vizor which may not only be washed together withthe other portion of the cap but which may berolled or folded without injury and without causing it to lose its shape.

With the above and other objects in view,

the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and ar rangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cap, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.

In the accompanying drawing 1 denotes the body portion of the cap which isof semispherical shape and made of a plurality of segmental-shaped pieces of fabric which can be washed. Within the body of the cap is an annular sweat band 2 also made of a washable fabric and having its upper and lower edges folded over, the upper edge being secured by-a row of stitching 2 3 denotes a vizor arranged in the front edge of the body and composed of a plurality of layers of canvas, fiber cloth or slmllar stiff washable fabric, and an outer covering of fabric composed of a top piece 5 and a bottom piece 5*'*. These two pieces 5, 5 have their outer edges inturned and united by arow of stitching 5". The inner edge of the lower piece 5 projects beyond the inner edges of the stiffening pieces 4 and is united to the upturned lower edge of the sweat band 2 by a row-of stitches 5. The inner edge of the upper piece 5 is also extended and is united/[o the inner edge of the lower piece 5 to the inturned bottom edge of the body 1, and the upturned bottom edge of the sweat band 2 by the row of. stitching 5 which latter extends around the body of the cap and unites the sweat band thereto, as shown in Fig. 2. The several stiffening layers 4 and the covering layers 5, 5 are united by substantially parallel or concentric rows of Stitching 6 which extend longitudinally across the vizor or concentric with its outer edge, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. By constructing the vizor in this manner it will be seen that it will be flexible so that the entire cap may be scrubbed in a washtub and then put through a clothes wringer without injury to the cap. When dry it will retain its shape and will be an exceedingly effective cap for the use of locomotive engineers, firemen and the like. The peculiar construction of the cap also permits it to be folded or rolled so that it can be conveniently carried in the pocket.

In practice, the inner or under face of the vizor is covered with fabric that is green, blueor any other color which will be restful to the eyes.

What is claimed, is: 7

The herein described foldable, washable cap comprising a substantially semispherical body having an inturned edge extending around the same and upwardly therein, a sweat band arranged within the body and having an upturned lower edge disposed on its outer side, and a vizor comprising a stifl'- ening inner fabric, and covering fabrics on the upper and lower sides thereof, the inner edges of the covering fabrics of the vizor extending inwardly from the stiffening fabric thereof, and being upturned, and disposed between the inturned edge of the cap body, and the upturned edge of the sweat band,

said edges of the covering fabrics of the vizor being secured to the said upturned edges of the cap body and of the sweat band, the upturned edge of the sweat band at points other than where the same is attached to the lower covering fabric of thevizor be- In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my ing attached to the upturned inner edge of signature in the presence of two witnesses. the cap body, the upturned inner edges of the inwardly extended upper and lower cov- GEORGE KROMER 'A ers of the vizor forming a flexib1e=c0nnecti0n Witnesses:
