2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in sun hats and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of this character which is adapted to be expeditiously folded in a manner to require a minimum of space when not in use.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a hat of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, highly attractive in appearance, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of 'a hat constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective View thereof.
Figure 3 is an elevational View, showing the hat folded.
Figures 4 and 5 are detail views in perspective, showing different means for connecting the inner ends of the ribs together.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the hat comprises a foldable frame formed from a plurality of ribs 1 of any suitable material. While the ribs which have been illustrated are straight, they may be bent as desired to form hats of different shapes. The ribs I terminate in enlarged inner end portions which are pivotally connected, as at 2. It may be well to here state that the ribs l constituting the frame structure open and close substantially in the manner of a fan.
Mounted on the ribs l is a cover 3 which may be of any suitable flexible material. As illustrated to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the inner end portions of the ribs I are free of the cover 3, said cover being substantially in the form of a split ring the ends of which are detachably secured together by a zipper fastener 4 or other suitable means. If desired, the central opening thus left in the hat may be covered or concealed in any suitable manner. The reference numeral 5 designates a tie ribbon or tape having its in termediate portion attached to the interior of the hat at the rear of the central opening therein.
It is thought that the manner in which the hat functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. When the hat is folded and not in use, as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the ribs l parallel each other and the ribbon 5 may be tied therearound for securing the article in this folded position. When the hat is to be used it is opened substantially in the manner of a fan and the ends of the split cover 3 are secured together by the fastening'means 4. The split cover 3 is of insufficient length to form a fiat disk or ring. Therefore, when the ends of this cover are drawn together and secured said cover assumes a substantially conical shape, as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing. When the hat is being worn the ribbon 5 is adapted to be tied around the back of the head. Of course, the hat is to be attractively ornamented.
As shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the inner ends of the ribs I may be slidably and pivotally connected directly to a ring 6. Or, as illustrated by the Fig. 5 modification, the ribs I may be pivotally and slidably connected to the ring 6 through the medium of links 1.
It is believed that the many advantages of a hat constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although preferred embodiments are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications and changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A hat of the class described comprising a plurality of rib forming rods each having one end flattened and enlarged with said flattened and enlarged ends placed one upon another, a
pivot pin passing through said ends for pivotally connecting the rods together, a cover of flexible material, said cover being formed in the shape of a wide split ring with its ends separated, means for fastening the cover to the rods, means for detachably connecting the ends of the ring shaped cover together, which makes the hat of substantially conical shape.
2. A hat of the class described comprising a plurality of rib forming rods each having one end flattened and enlarged with said flattened and enlarged ends placed one upon another, a pivot pin passing through said ends for pivot-. ally connecting the rods together, a cover of flexible material, said cover being formed in the shape of a wide split ring with its ends separated, means for fastening the cover to the rods, means for detachably connecting the ends of the ring-shaped cover together, which makes the hat of substantially conical shape, and a ribbon having an in termediate portion attached to the inner side portion of the cover intermediate upper and lower edge portions of said cover, said ribbon acting to hold the hat on the head and also acting to hold the parts of the hat in folded position.
