4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hats and more particularly to a hat formed of sheet material, preferably textile fabrics, anddesigned for feminine wear.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a hat of simple and inexpensive construction, the shape of which may be readily a1- tered so that it can be worn in at least twentyfive different styles.
Another object is to supply a hat that can be adjusted and draped to be suitable and attractive to various types of facial features.
A further object is to furnish a hat which may be packed flat without injury to the styling whereby the same is rendered ideal for travelling and storage.
A still further object is to provide an attractive hat which may be made from only two blanks.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a plan view of a blank from which the body of the hat may be formed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view after the ends of the blank have been brought together and sewed to one another and the top and bottom have been stitched.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View on the line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 2 after the hat body has been turned inside-out and one side wall of the hat body has been gathered by stitching along opposite sides of the center seam.
Fig. 6 is a section of a detail on the line 6-5 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the concealing strip.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the complete hat.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates a blank of suitable material, such as a textile fabric, and of generally rectangular shape. In accordance with the invention, the blank should be of a length commensurate with the head-size of the person who is to wear the hat, plus adequate allowance for a seam.
I0 may be `sewed at IIIa to provide an inverted bag. When this has been done, the bag can be turned inside-out and the vertical central portion of the side of the bag having the seam, can be gathered by any suitable means, such as stitches', indicated at II and I2, taken along opposite sides of the seam. In gathering, I prefer to take three or four stitches for each gathered portion, gathering tightly, and fastening to the first stitch in the gathered portion so as to maintain the pleats I2a thus formed. Of course, as indicated in Fig. 5, this will cause the middle portion of one side of the bag to be shortened materially with reference to the opposite side of the bag, and afterwards a concealing strip I3, of textile fabric or the like, can be arranged substantially vertically in front of the seam and have its end portions secured respectively to the open and closed ends of the bag, at the gathered side thereof, as will be evident from Fig. 8.
In making a hat in his way, I also prefer at the beginning to turn the lower edge or mouth portion of the fabric inwardly and to sew the same in place, as indicated at Ii, to provide a hem at the mouth portion of the hat. To make a heater job, I may also leave the medial portion of the sewed end I of the bag open during the first portion of the manufacture to allow one end of the concealing strip I3 to be inserted into the closed end of the bag before the concealing strip is sewed to that end. It will be obvious from Fig. 8, that after the concealing strip has been added, it will cover the gathering stitches II and I2.
From the foregoing, it is believed the improved hat and method of manufacturing the same may be readily understood, and it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that after manufacture, the hat can be draped in a multiplicity of ways so as to change the appearance thereof. For example, the corner I5, the corner I6, or both, may be tucked in, or either one or both may be folded over the front or rear of the hat and secured in place.
While I have disclosed what I now consider to be a preferred embodiment of the invention in In making the hat from such blank, the ends such manner that the same may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, I am aware that changes may be made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A hat of the character described formed from a substantially rectangular blank ofsheet material having edge portions secured together so as to provide an inverted bag having a seam extending up the central portion of one side thereof, the material of the bag being gathered at opposite sides of the seam so that the central portion of that side of the bag is of materially less length than the opposite side of the bag, and means secured to the bag and concealing said seam.
2. A hat of the character described formed from a. substantially rectangular blank of sheet material having edge portions secured together so as to provide an inverted bag having a seam extending up the central portion of one side thereof, the material of the bag being gathered at opposite sides of the seam so that the central portion of that side of the bag is of materially less length than the opposite side of the bag, and a strip concealing said seam, extending substantially vertically and secured to the bag.
4. Ahat of the character described formed from a substantially rectangular blank of textile sheet material having edge portions secured together so as to provide an inverted bag having a seam extending up the central portion of one side thereof, the material of the bag being gathered at opposite sides of the seam so that the central portion of that side of the bag is of materially less length than the opposite side of 'the .bag, and means concealing said seam and
