Thisv invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements invladies hats; and the principal object of the 'invention is to provide a foldable hat made from one piece. of flexible material which is arranged so as to provide upper and lower pockets, the upper pocket being adapted to accommodate the head of the wearer while the lower pocket may receive the back portion of the wearers hair, the entirearrangement ofthe hat being4 such that it may be applied to the head in several different manners, depending on the taste'of the user as well as on whether the hat is tov be used for town, country, "or beachY wear, it being apparent from the foregoing that the hat is of a highly versatile, convertible nature, variations in its style resulting from several different manners in which it may be applied and iitted to the head.

Some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its eincient and expeditious use, in its highly pleasing appearance, in its adaptability to convenient storage when it is not in use, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

This application is a continuation-in-part of my earlier application, Serial No. 135,763, led December 29, 1949 now abandoned.

With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in use;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention per se;

Figure 3 is a developed plan View of the invention;

Figure 4 is a sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure 3.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a foldable ladies hat which is designated generally by the reference character Ill and is formed from a single rectangular sheet of flexible material I2 such as fabric or plastic, the sheet I2 having opposite end portions I4, I6 thereof doubled upon itself along upper and lower transverse fold lines I8, 20 respectively, so as to afford a substantially square,

(C1. 2-198) relatively large back 'panel y22 and upper and lower, relatively small front panels which are constituted bythe aforementioned, doubled end The sheet portions or panels I4', I6 have the respective inner, transverse edges 24, 25 thereof spaced apart longitudinally of the sheet so as to expose an intermediate portion 28 of the back panel 22 therebetween, that is, between the front panels I'4, I 6, and it is to be noted that before the sheet is folded 'as described, the ventire perimetric edge of the sheet is hei'nstitched as indicated at 3(1- y Moreover, side edges ofthe-front panels I4, I6 are secured by lines of stitching 32 to corresponding side edge portions of the back panel 22, and a substantially semi-circular line of stitching 34 attaches the upper front panel I4 to the back panel 22 and extends upwardly and inwardly from opposite sides of the sheet to adjacent the upper fold line I8, as is best shown in Figure 3.

Accordingly, the line of stitching 34 secures the upper front panel I4 to the back panel 22 in such manner as to afford therebetween an inverted upper pocket 36, while an arcuate line of stitching 38 attaches the lower front panel I6 to the back panel 22 and extends downwardly and inwardly from one side of the sheet to a point adjacent the lower fold line 20, so as to provide a depending lower pocket 40 between the lower front panel I6 and the back panel 22, as shown.

Finally, a tie strap 42 has an intermediate portion thereof secured as at 43 to the back surface of the back panel 22 adjacent the center`of the latter, the tie strap 40 having a pair of free end portions 44.

When the invention is placed in use, the upper front panel I4 is lifted forwardly and upwardly relative to the line o-f stitching 34 so that the upper corner portions 46 of the hat are swung rearwardly and downwardly and the upper pocket 36 is opened to receive the top of the head of a wearer, as shown in Figure 1. f

When the hat is so applied to the head, the lower portion of the back panel 22 and the lower front panels I6 depend from the back of the head and, if desired, the back portion of the wearers hair may be inserted in the lower pocket 4I). Since the line of stitching 38 does not extend the full width of the hat, the lower pocket 40 has a relatively greater volume or capacity on one side than on the other, whereby insertion of the hair into the lower pocket from the relatively larger side is facilitated.

In any event, the free end portions 44 of the tie strap 40 are then extended forwardly and inwardly around the intermediate portion 28 of the back panel 22, the free end portions of the tie strap being extended in opposite directions and tied together so as to draw the intermediate porscription thereof at this point is deemed unnec i* essary.

While in the foregoing there has been. shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of n the invention as claimed.'

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: j v A folding ladies hat comprising a single rectangular sheet of flexible material having end portions thereof doubled upon itself along upper fand lower transverse fold lines to provide a relatively large back panel and relatively small upper and lower front panels having inner transverse edges thereof spaced apart longitudinally of the back panel to expose an intermediate portion of the back panel therebetween the front panels, side edges of said front panels being secured to corresponding side edge portions of the back panel, Ya, substantially semi-circular line' of stitching attaching the upper front panel to the back panel and extending upwardly and inwardly from opposite sides of said sheet to adjacent the upper fold line whereby to provide an inverted 5 upper pocket between the upper front panel and the back panel for receiving a users head, an arcuate line of stitching attaching the lower front panel tothe back panel and extending downwardly and inwardly from one side of said sheet 10 and'terminating at a point adjacent the lower fold line whereby to pro-vide a depending lower pocket between the lower front panel and the vback panel for receiving the back portion of a Y users hair, and a tie strap having free end porl5A tions and an intermediate portion secured to the back surface of Ythe back panel at a point adjacent the center of the latter, whereby the free end portions of said strap may be extended transversely in opposite directions around said inter- 20 -mediate'portion of the back panel to drawthe same together and whereby said free end portions may be connected to sustain the hat on a users head;
