1 Claim. (Cl. 2-197) easily cleaned so that it is not necessary to launder them in the usual way.
Another object of the invention is the provision of improved construction for hats and caps having adjustable bands in which the bands are made of smooth white or colored plastic provided with a removable top that can,
be replaced, changed, or cleaned with a minimum amount of expense. y
Another object is the provision of improved forms Aof construction for hats and caps which lend themselves most readily to the attachment of advertising matter or names of products or companies, or the like, and in which the fastening means for'. such advertising or name cards is practically concealed. y
Another object of the invention is the provision of improved hats 'and caps utilizing resilient, bendable, yet rigid, plastic bands by means of .which snap fasteners may be employed withoutany tendency toward the cracking, breaking, or ytearing of the plastic.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved cap for countermen and the like, including a resilient, bendable plastic band that may be washed with soap and water, with or without a visor, and a mesh top, the mesh top being adjustable in size at the back, and the plastic band being adjustable in size so that one size of cap may be used to t many different persons.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the single sheet of drawings accompanying this specilication,
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a workers cap having a plastic band anda plastic visor;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, taken from the back, showing the adjustable feature of the band from the. rear;
Fig. 3 is a rear View, showing the adjustability of the plastic band, as well as the top covering;
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of a separate unit for supporting the snap fasteners, which fasten the bands together;
Fig. 5 is a sectional View, taken through the band and top covering, adjacent the snap fastener unit, with the snap fasteners omitted;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken through ICC 2 the band, top cover, and visor, on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to Figs. 1-6, the present caps all preferably include a foundation band of substantially cylindrical shape, which may be made out of a substantially rectangular strip of flexible, smooth sheet plastic, white in color or provided with any other desired color.
Various types of plastics may be employed; but they are preferably vheat resistive so that they are definitely not inammable. Among those that may be employed are vinyl chloride acetate resins, vinyl chloride resins, vinylidene chloride resins, vinyl butyral resins, vinyl yalcohol resin, methyl methacrylate, polystyrene, polyethylene,
cellulose acetate, and cellulose acetate butyrate. All of the foregoing have a very slow burning rate, are neutral in characteristics and resistive to acids and alkaloids, and may be provided in shiny sheet form of white or colors in such manner that dirt does not penetrate, and may be readily washed olf with soap and water.
The present workers cap preferably includes a top covering 136 and a plastic band 135 madeof smooth,
shiny sheet plastic bent to circular form and provided with means for adjustably securing its ends together.
This mode 'of securement may consist of a plurality of pairs of apertures 148 in one end of the band and 149 in the other end of the band, these pairs being adapted to register with each other so that by selecting predetermined apertures the circumferential size of the band may be changed.
The -ends of the band are preferably secured together by means of a snap fastener unit 150, shown in Fig. 4.
This snap fastener unit may consist of. astrip of iiexible plastic which is folded backward at 151 and at 152 and at each of its ends to leave a strong projecting tabY which is used in pulling the fasteners apart.l v
This strip 150 supports two male snap fasteners 153 an two female snap fasteners 154 in position to ,engage each other when the strip is folded upon itself at A155 midway between its ends. These snap fasteners are then located to pass through the apertures 148, 149.
Thus the present cap may have its band adjusted to any size head; and the top covering is automatically adjusted by the elastic strip 145, which is located adjacent the adjustable part of the band. In this case the top covering permits ventilation of the hair and also serves as a sweat band because it is attached to the lower part of the supporting band 135.
The cover 136 is made of a circular piece of mesh or net, which is gathered at a plurality of places 137,v 138 around its periphery. The band and visor 139 are preferably made of the same material, such as the white plastic. The top cover 136 and the binding and connection between the visor and band may be made of a contrasting color, such as dark blue. Any color combinations may be employed.
The visor is provided around its edges with a tape binding 140, folded over the edge, and yalso folded under itself and secured with a single line of stitching 141.
The band 135 is also provided with a similar binding tape 142, extending along the bottom edge and up the two ends 143, 144' of the band 135. At a predetermined point in the back of the cover 136 a piece of elastic 145 is sewed to the rim of the cover 136 in such manner that the rear part of the cover may be extended when the size of the band is adjusted.
The elastic preferably extends on the bias with respect to the weave of the mesh or net 136. Thus the mesh or net top is adapted to extend with the elastic 145. All of the rest of the periphery of the top 136, except the elastic portion 145, is caught in the binding tape 142 of the band 135 and sewed directly to the lower part of the band 135 with the same stitching that secures the binding.
The visor 139 also has a strip of fabric 146 secured to the binding 140 of the visor along the rear edge of the visor. The connection strip 146 for the visor has its rear edge 147 caught in the tape 142 and sewed to the band 135 by the same line of stitching that secures the tape 142 and top 146.
The connecting strip 146 between the visor and the plastic band comprises a strip of flexible plastic or fabric covered with plastic, which is rectangular in shape, but has its ends folded under so that there is less tendency to rip at the ends.
The connecting strip 146, being secured to the concave part of the visor and to the plastic band, the visor is pulled into curved shape, as shown in Fig. 1, and may be caused to snap upward or snap downward.
The operation of the hat is as follows. When the end apertures 148 and 149 are used, the cap is at its maximum size; and the top covering stretches at the elastic 145 to accommodate the head. When the last apertures 148 toward the left are used with the last apertures 149 toward the right, the cap is at minimum size; and the elastic 145 gathers the rear edge of the cap to accommodate itself to this size.
Various intermediate sizes may be adjusted also by using intermedaite combinations of holes. Instead of using a mesh top, it is also possible to use a closed weave fabric top for excluding dust, wherever a ventilated cap is not desired.
It will thus be observed that I have invented an improved cap construction for workers, in which the visor and foundation band may be readily cleaned with soap and water; and they may be provided with binding tape of contrasting color so as to give a very attractive appearance.
The present caps include a hairnet and may be used by girls, who may tuck the lower hair up under the plastic band, the hairnet bulging upwardly to accommodate it.
The cap may be employed with a visor when it is desired to shade the eyes; or in some cases, for a distinctive appearance, the visor may be omitted, as in the case of caps for hotel porters.
Various printed matter or advertising matter may be placed on the foundation band and secured by means of transparent pressure type adhesive tape.
While I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, many modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and l do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of all changes within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A workers cap, comprising a band of smooth, exible sheet plastic having sufficient stiness to maintain a circular shape when its ends are secured together, and a top covering, comprising a substantially circular, loose mesh fabric, the said band being provided adjacent the first of its ends with a plurality of pairs of vertically spaced apertures, and having a pair of vertically spaced apertures in the other end registering with any pair of apertures in the first end, for securement of the ends of the plastic band together, and fastening means passing simultaneously through the registering apertures in the plastic band to form a crown of adjustable size for engagement with the head of the wearer, the said crown having a -binding tape folded over its lower edge, and its ends, and secured by a line of stitching extending through the plastic band and the binding tape on the inside and the outside of the band, the said top covering having its edge caught in the fold of said binding tape at the bottom of said crown and on the inside, and secured to the crown by the same line of stitching about the major portion of said crown, excepting the end portions of said band, which are left loose from the top covering, the unattached portion of the top covering being provided with an elastic strip stitched to the edge of the top covering at the unattached portion thereof, the said elastic strip being shorter than said unattached portion tending to draw the loose mesh fabric together adjacent the ends of said band, and adjusting the top covering to the size of the crown adjacent the end portions of the band.
