HAT-COVERING.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3% fi ht.
Application filed. July 9, 1915. Serial No. 38,993.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weleetka, in the county of Okfuskee, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Coverings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a vfull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in coverings for straw hats, and the like, and has for its object to so construct an article of this type capable of being easily and quickly placed over the hat during inclement weather.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hat covering which is formed from light water-proof material, and is so constructed that the same can be easily placed over the hat, and when removed therefrom the covering may be placed within the crown of the hat.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a covering of this type provided with means for holding the same in frictional engagement with the crown of the hat when the covering is not in use, and further to provide means whereby the covermg may be easily removed for use.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the covering in the position assumed when in place over a straw hat. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a hat equipped with the covering. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through a hat showing the covering arranged in the crown thereof.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates the conventional form of stiif straw hat having the usual brim 2 and sweat band 3.
The covering 4 comprises a crown portion 5 which has secured to its lower edge a band 6 which is adapted to rest on the upper surface of the brim 2, said band being stitched at its outer edge to the outer edge of the band 7, the latter being adapted to engage against the under surface of the brim 2. The inner edge of the band 7 is provided with an annular pocket 8 in which is concealed an elastic cord 9, said cord serving to pucker the inner edge of the band 7 so as to hold the covering firmly in place on the hat.
The top 10 of the crown portion is provided with a disk of stifiened material 11 so that when the covering is placed within the crown of the hat 1 the edge of the top 10 will frictionally engage the inner surface of the hat crown, thus holding the covering firmly in place and when placed outside the hat the stiffened disk will make the crown portion 5 lie flat on the crown of the hat.
The covering is preferably formed of rubber coated linen, or the same may be made from oil silk or the like, and may be made in any color desired.
A button 12 is sewed to the top 10 of the covering so that the same can be easily pulled from the crown of the hat when desired for use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a covering has been provided which can be quickly placed over the hat to protect the same from rain, dew and dust.
It will be apparent that the covering may be used in connection with felt hats having fiat crown tops.
In lieu of the button 12, a strip of fabric of the same material from which the cover is made, may be used.
What is claimed is A hat covering comprising a crown engaging portion and a brim engaging portion, the crown portion of the covering having a disk of stiflened material carrled thereby, whereby the covering will be held in the hat crown by the frictional engagement between the edge of the disk and inner surface of the hat crown, said disk causing the crown of the cover to lie flat on the hat crown when the cover is placed on the outside of the hat.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
