SCHOLARS COMPANION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,682, dated May 21, 1895.
Application filed September 27, 1894. Serial No. 524,255. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that ABBIE E. GREVES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the ycounty of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scholars Companions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. A
This invention has relation rto improvements in scholars companions and it consistsv in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention,in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of my de'- vice. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the same folded. Fig. 3 is a side View, and
Fig. 4 is a back or rear view. Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the scholars companion or hand receptacle composed of a double thickness of water proof material as at a, a and which are stitched to one another around the edges having the binding of tape secured thereto as shown at b. On the inner face of the inner piece of material is arranged .an elastic strip c which passes through slits d made in the said inner face and the ends e,e thereof are stitched to the companion as shown. This elastic piece provides arack or securer for pencils, pen holders, slate pencils, rbc., While the ends of the same project into slits or openings f made in the inner face of the device and prevent the pencils, &c from being lost or accidentally displaced from said elastic holder.
C, represents a piece of water proof material arranged about the center of the device and extends from one side thereof to the other side and is stitched at its lower end or edge as well as its end edges to the companion. Stitches g, running crosswise said piece and about the center thereof, binding the middle portion to the' companion, provide two pockets h and t' which are designed to receive a pen-wiper and rubber and the other a`sponge. The upper edge j, of these pockets or receptacles has a binding which is also made` of WaterV proof material. lThe bottom k thereof is bound with similar material.
D, indicates a similar strip of material as that shown at C. The same is stitched around its edgeto the companion as at Z Z andm and at its center at n to a point o about half way or the center of said strip or piece D, when said stitching runs laterally` and to the edge lof the companion providing a pocket pfor pens while the pocket q, is designed for a bottle containing Water or inks as desired. A slit or space r is cut in the lower portion of the piece D, which gives access to the pocket s or space below the pocket containingfpens.
Between the lower edge of the piece C and the upper edge of the piece D, is left a space t, across which is arranged a piece of clothor other material u and which is stitched at each end fv, o, to the companion, and said piece is designed to receive a ruler and hold it in position in the companion. The space s, or
pocket is designed to receive an eraser or or-v dinary knife, and the slits or openings are designed to protect the pencil points. On the back of the companion is a pocket x, which is to receive writing books, cards, &c. Strings 'w w, are connected to one end of thetcompanion, or the outer fold and serve to tie up said campanion'.k Y
It will be seen that I construct a scholars companion of water proof as Well as exible material, the same being noiseless With the most careless handling, the same containing pockets for different articles, and the elastic holder in connection with the slits hold the pencils in place as Well as protect the points thereof; cannot become accidentally. displaced, and a device as herein shown and described is durable, handy to carry, and ornamental as Well as cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A scholar-s companion formed of water proof material and having on its inner face a series of Openings through which pass strips of elastic material, to receive pencils the ends of which enter openings formed in said inner face, the strip C, having opposite pockets one of which is adapted to receive a pen lwiper and rubber, and the other a sponge, the strip D, forming separate pockets for pens and an IOO ink bottle, the pocket S, for the reception of In testimony whereof I affix my signature a knife, the strip u, secured to the edges of in presence of two witnesses. the strips C and D, through which passes a ruler, and the pocket x, arranged on the outside or back of the companion, the whole oom- "Witnesses: bined and arranged as and for the purposes SAMUEL W. MURPHY,
Specified.
