HOLSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 27, 1906.
, Application filed February 12,1906. Serial ITO-300.717.
T0 (tZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH WV. TOWNSEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holsters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in holsters; and its object is to provide a simple device of this class, one that can readily be attached to and detached from the clothing or belt of the user, and one that will securely hold a pistol and of such a shape that the pistol can be readily and easily withdrawn.
WVith these objects in view my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a person using the invention in the act of drawing a pistol. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention, showing the same as applied to the clothing of the user and with the pistol in place; and Figs. 8 and 4. are side elevations showing two modified forms of the invention.
(t represents the back piece of the holster, which is simply a flat piece of stiff leather shaped as shown. In the form shown in Fig. 3 it is provided with upwardly-projecting ears I) and c for attachment to the belt or waistband and is provided with buttonholes d and e.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 the holster is of a shape adapted to be secured in the rear hip-pocket, and the part a is provided with an upper curved surface h and with buttonholes f and g, which may be secured on buttons applied to the trousers or by means of lap-rings, such as i.
j represents the front plate of the holster, which consists of a single piece of leather fastened on both sides to the back piece a, as shown at k, for example. The holster is open at the top and bottom, as indicated on the drawings.- The upper edge of the front piece is curved, as shown at l, and is provided with a cut-out portion m and a projecting ear n. This car is sewed around all of its edges to the back piece a except at the cut-away portion m. The front piece is provided with a clip 0, operated by a spring 10. This clip is adapted to fit over and engage the outer part of the rear hip-pocket, as shown in Fig. 2.
In putting a pistol into the holster the muzzle is inserted between the back piece a and front piece and the pistol pushed down or allowed to drop of its own weight, whereupon it will assume the position shown in Fig. 2 with the trigger-guard resting on the ear 1. In this way the pistol will be firmly held in the holster, but can be quickly withdrawn without danger of being entangled in any part of the holster.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A holster comprising a front plate and a back plate, the latter being provided with buttonholes, and the former being provided with an ear, and a recessed portion separating said ear from the main portion of the front plate, said ear being secured to said back plate around its entire exposed edge except at said recessed portion, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a holster consisting of a back plate provided with buttonholes, a front plate secured thereto and provided with a projecting ear and a recessed portion, said ear being fastened to said back plate over its entire exposed edge except at the recessed portion, and a spring-clip secured to said front plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH W. TOWNSEND.
