Description

'116318 PATENTE JUN@ um iituzmn: I @ummm UNITED STATES ELIAS JONES, OF GRAND BIVER, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-POCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,318, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAs JoNEs, of Grand River, in the county of Wayne and State of IoWa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Pockets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a frontelevation of my improved pocket-safe. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same through the line w x in Fig. 1.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this improvement is to provide a pliable pocketsafe which can be attached to any article of clothing, the pocket being protected by metallic plates and rings or links.
In the drawing, A represents a pocket, made of cloth or other suitable material, surrounded and protected by a network of metal rings, a, and links af, as shown. The links a consist of narrow iiat bands of metal so applied to the rings that the pocket, when complete, Will be straightsided or fiat, although iiexible in all directions. The rings and links forni a complete protection against the cutting into or opening of the pocket by knives or other instruments in the hands of robbers. The pocket A, thus protected, may be attached to any article of clothing. B represents a portion of a dress to which the pocket A is at- 'pickpockets tached, and the mouth ofthe said pocket Where it enters the dress is protected by an armored cover or iiap, D, composed ofleather or cloth, the armor consisting of metallic plates C, which are riveted to the cover D, as shown. The cover D is attached to the dress B, and is held closed over the mouth A of the pocket by a stud or other fastening, E, the said stud being attached to a plate, F, secured to the dress B just below the mouth A of the pocket. A small lock and key may be employed in place of the stud E, and the cover of a watch-pocket may be held down by a spring, in addition to the other fastening. By covering the cover or iiap D with armor-plates C the cover is rendered flexible, so that it can be turned up and allow access to the pocket, and, when closed, the cover D makes the mouth A of the pocket burglar-proof. The pocket may be made a part of wearin g apparel When the latter is being manufactured.
My improvement forms a good pocket-safe, and is a protection against the depredations of Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the armored cover O With the burglar-proof pocket A, substantially as herein shown and described.
