POCKET-BOOK GUARD OR FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,178, dated July 17, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM SARIPKIN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Book Guards or Fasten- Y ers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings. I

My invention consists of a device forfconnecting or fastening a pocket book, wallet, &c., to the pocket in which the same is carried, thus guarding the samefrom improper abstraction.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pocket book having a guard or fastening embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a 4 .longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a portion thereof. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in-the several figures.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a pocket book or wallet of ordinary construction.

B designates a shaft which is journaled in eyes 0 on the plate D, the latter being riveted or otherwise secured to one of the leaves or folds of the pocket book. On the plate D is a tongue E, which is chi; and bent out from the plate D, as most plainly shown in Fig. 3, and is elastic in its nature, producing a spring.

The shaft B is bent at a portion of its length adjacent to the tongue E, forming the crank F, which is adapted to bear against the tongue or spring E whensaid shaft is properly rotated. On the shaft is a hook G, and on the exterior of the pocket book is a face plate H having slots J and K therein, which slots-are so disposed that they may be entered by said hook G.

When the parts are in their normal condition, the hook G is within the'pocket book, it

having cleared the face plate H, and turned through the slot L in the plate D,and lodged back of the latter, see Fig. 4..

When the book is placed in a pocket, the shaft B is rotated, whereby the hook passes through the slots L and J, and is then directed through the fabric of the pocket, and its point finally passing through the slot K is seated in the slot L in the plate D, whereby said point is guarded, and is not liable to pierce the flesh or scratch the hand when introduced into the pocket, the position of partsbeing shown in Fig. 4 the book also holding thepocket, and the two plates clamped firmly together as one, and preventing play of the said book in the pocket whereby any attempt to abstract the book will be sensitively communicated to the owner. As the crank F has passed its center, and the spring E bears against said crank, the shaft B is prevented from rotating, and thus the book remains connected with the pocket of the garment, and it cannot be Withdrawn therefrom. When however, the shaft is properly rotated, the hook turns back from the fabric and re-enters the book where it remains, owing to the pressure of the spring E. o

By having the tongue E between the bearings of the rod, instead of at one end, and outsideof the bearings, there is a greater certainty of its being held in place.

The shaft B is provided with a knob or handle M for conveniently rotating the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The face plate H having the two slots J and K therein, in combination with the back plate D, the shaft B mounted thereon and the hook G secured to said shaft, said plate having therein the two slots L, L, which are 00- incident with the slots J and K, of the face plate, whereby the hookwhen in closed position has its point guarded behind the slot L and the two plates are drawn closely together, substantially as described.

2. i The face plate with the two slots J and K, the back plate with the two slots L, L, coincident with said slots J and K, the shaft B which is mounted on said back plate, the hook Cand the crank F on said shaft, and the spring tongue E on said back plate, said tongue being bent out from the back plate and integral therewith, the parts named being combined substantially as described.
