IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-CURTAIN FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,693, dated December 10, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNA M2 BARDWELL, of Amherst, of the county of Hampshire, of the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons for Carriages, &c.; and do hereby declare the Same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanyiug drawing, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of the button and eye as applied to two pieces of .cloth or leather; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 4. an under-side view of the button; Fig. 5 is a side view, and

Fig. 6 a top view of the button-eye and its stellated or star-pointed disk.

The eye A of the button is separate from the body or mainpart a of the button B, the said eye being extended from a stellated or star-pointed disk, I). In order to hold the eye to a pieceof leather or cloth, 0, the eye is to be put through it so as to bring the disk against the cloth, and the star-points 0 through the cloth, such points subsequently being bent down upon the cloth. The button-body a is a hollow head or case provided with an opening or slot, a, through its bottom 6 at the middle thereof; also, with a guide-spur, f, to

project from such bottom at one end of the opening, the spur being the portion separated from the button in order to form the slot. The slot is to receive the eye or enable it to pass into the body of the button and engage with a slide bolt or latch, g, arranged therein, and to extend outwardly therefrom, as shown, the said bolt or latch being formed as represented,

and provided with one or more springs, h, to force it into engagement with or into the eye. On grasping the button-body and the projecting part '6 of the latch between the thumb and index-finger the latch may be forced back so as to disengage the button from the eye. The button, besides the guide-spur f, has other spurs, 70, for fixing it to the piece of cloth I), all Such spurs being forced through the cloth and clinched or bent down upon it, so as to fasten the button to it. In order to enable the eye to be passed through the piece of cloth D the latter should be duly slitted'.

' The guide-spur f answers not only to aid in securing the button to the cloth, but as a guide for the eye in its passage into the button-body or its withdrawal therefrom.

I claim as my invention as follows, via:

1. The button-body chambered and provided with the eye-hole, and having the latch arranged within and extended out of such body, and having one or more operative springs, all substantially as specified.

2. The button-body provided with the latch, its operative spring ,or springs, eye-hole, and fastening-spurs, all'arranged substantially as shown, and foruse with an eye as explained.

3. The eye provided with the star-pointed disk, as shown, for supporting the eye and connecting it with a piece of cloth or other material.
