IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,880, dated August 17, 1875; application filed August 6, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAZARUS LOESER, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings andv State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles, which 'improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view. The invention consists in a buckle composed of a guide-box for a belt or strap, a hinged tongue extending at right angles to the guiding-channel, and having a beveled stud and spring beneath its heel, so that when the guide-box is secured to a trunk or other article the strap can be drawn through it in one direction, while the stud on the hinged springtongue retains the same when an attempt is made to pull it in the opposite direction.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the base-plate of my buckle, to which is fastened the guide-box B, and which is provided with ears 0, to adapt it to be attached to a trunk or other article, orto a strap or belt. The guide-box B forms the guide for a strap or belt, E, which is provided with a row of holes, a, as is common in articles of this class, the holes being made of such size that they may be engaged by the stud of the spring-tongue, next described. F designates the springtongue, which is connected to the top plate of the guide-box B by a hinge-joint, G, which may be of any suitable construction, the tongue being made to project a short distance rearward from this hinge-Joint, at which point it is subjected to the action of a spring. This spring H is, in the present example, composed of a strip of steel or other metal, and is fastened to the heel of the tongue by a rivet, a, the two ends of the spring being made to bear on the base-plate A. p

A coiled-wire spring may, however, be substituted for the spring H with a like result.

The tongue F has a downwardly-projecting stud, b, which may be fastened to the tongue or cast with it, as circumstances may dictate, and which is formed with a beveled side and a square side, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Thus, when the strap E is drawn through the guidebox and the tongue F is depressed by its spring, the stud b engages with the holes a in the strap, and -the latter is held in a taut condition.

By lifting the spring-tongue, the strap E is disengaged from the stud b, and may be loosened or further tightened, as the case may be.

By the peculiar form of the stud b, as described, it permits of tightening the strap E, or of drawing it through the guide-box B in one direction. whether or not the tongue F is raised, while at the same time the stud prevents'a backward movement of the strap.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A buckle composed of a guide-bar, B, for a belt or strap, a hinged tongue, F, extending at right angles to the guiding-channel. and having a beveled stud and a spring beneath its heel, substantially as shown and described.
