PENCIL HOLDER AND BAKE KNIFE.
Application filed November 22, 1918. Serial No. 263,728
To all who m,- z' t may concern Be it known that I, Trroiriis J. MoGiNNIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Helens, in the county of Columbia and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Holders and Bake Knives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combination pencil holder and rake knife.
An important object of this invention is toprovide novel means for detachably sup porting a carpenters pencil in combination with means for conveniently marking timber.
further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is few in parts, neat in appearance, and of highly simplified construction.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which is characterized by its ease of manipulation and cheapness of manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodied in my invention, I
Figure 2 is a similar view of the device showing the marking element in a closed position, and, s
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 38 of Figure 1.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of. illustration is shown the preferred emhruiliineni; of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the handle oi my improved cornbination pencil holder and rake knife. The handle 5 is stamped from a single blank of metal curved transversely to form a U- shaped body portion having side walls 6. A pencil 7, which in this case is a carpenters pencil is adapted to be inserted within the rear end portion of the U-shaped body portion and frictionally retained therein. The forward end portion of the U-shaped body portion carries a rake blade 8 adapted for marking timber to be out. The rake blade 8 includes a head 9 having a shank 10 formed integral therewith. The shank 10 is U-shaped in cross section and is provided on its outer side with longitudinally extending groove 11 adapted to facilitate the lifting of the rake blade from a closed position.- The rear end portion of the head 9 is provided on its outer side with a shoulder or stop member 12 adapted to engage a spring 13 carried by the handle. The spring 13 is provided by partly severing the bight portion of the rear end of the handle 5 and longitudinally curving the same. When the device is open the contact face lt'oi the head 9 engages the inner side of the spring member 13, while'the shoulder 12 contacts with the rear end of the spring 13 and thus retains the blade 8 in a rigid position.
As shown in Figure 2, when the blade 8 is closed, a curved contact face 1501f the head 9 contacts with the inner side of the spring 13. A. rivet 16 extends transversely through the head 9 and alining openings in the side walls 6 of the handle. The outer end of the U-shaped shank 10 is beveled to provide a cutting surface 17 adapted for marking timber to be out, when the mark cannot be readily made by a pencil.
The rear end portion of the handle is cut away as at 18 to permit of the gripping oi the rake blade 8 for positioning the same in an operative position.
. While I have shown and described. the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arran ement and construction of parts as will remain within the spirit oi the invention and the scope of the appended. 7
claims.
I-i'aving thus described my invention, what I claim is:-
An article of the character set orth coinprising a handle. a spring carried by the forward end of the l'iandle and having its forward end free. a blade pivoted adjacent one of its ends to said end of the hendie and provided atlhat end with a seat arranged at an acute angle with respect to the blade and adapted to engage said. spring when the blade is in a laterally and rearwardly inclined position with respect to the handle, said blade having a lug extending from said end thereof for engagement with the forward free end of said spring when the blade 1s m the siz Lted position topre'vent the movement; of the blade beyond sand p051- "tion during use, and said blade being pro vlded at lts other end wlth a rake edge adapted to score the lumber by a draw out action.
