Description

CHARLES'BRIN TZINGHOFFER.
Improvement in Blacking Brushes.
Pate nted-0ct. 10, 1871.
WITNESSES-- INVENTOR-I to or about its center.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIC'E.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKING-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,815, dated October 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BRINTZING- HOFFER, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking or Shoe-Brushes, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my blackingbrush, showing the removable handle in position. Fig. 2 is a view of the brush with the handle removed. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the removable handle.
My invention relates to that class of blankingbrushes which are provided with removable handles, and is intended to improve upon such so as to render them less complicated, and consequently produce a cheaper and more effectual article; and to this particular end my invention consists of an improved combination and arrangement of parts for connecting the handle to the brush so that it can be attached and detached when desired, and when arranged in place is secured by a set-screw or its equivalent, so that it cannot become detached when subjected to a rapid action in brushing or polishing, the design of such construction being that, by detaching the handle, the same, together with the brush, is made to occupy a very small space for packing away for traveling or transportation.
In the accompanying drawing similar letters indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A designates the polishing-brush; B,the paste or oil-brush; and G, the removable handle, the form of which may be that of general construction. The top portion or back of the polishingbrush A is formed with a dovetailed slot or opening, D, extending centrally from the rear end up If the back of the polishing-brush is composed of two pieces, E F, as shown in Fig. 1, the part E only is provided with the slot D. G is the removable handle, provided at its lower or front end with the dovetail H, which is made of such size as to fit snugly within the dovetail D of the back ofthe polishing-brush A. The removable handle G is provided near its front end with a thumb or set-screw, J, or its equivalent, in such a manner that when the removable'handle is inserted from the rear of the brush into the dovetail groove or slot D and its front end comes in contact with the end of the slot D the fastening is screwed or forced down into the top of the brush, when the handle is firmly secured in place and cannot be disconnected by any ordinary action. A female screw may be arranged at the bottom of the slot l),the top of which will be flush with its surface, so as not to interfere with the ready insertion of the handle G. Said screw is intended to receive the thumb or set-screw J, so as to prevent wearing away of the wood. The walls of the dovetail D in the back A, together with the fastening device, serve, as it were, a substantial binding and clamping device, resisting all front, rear, and lateral strain; and such is an important feature, since the handle cannot become detached when subjected to a rapid action in polishing or brushing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The handleGr formed with the dovetail H and carrying the thumb or set-screw J, in combination with the back A of the polishing-brush formed with the dovetailed slot or groove D, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
To the above I have signed my name this 31st day of August, 1871. 7
CHARLES BRINTZINGHOFFER.
