JOHN D. BLOOM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED BLAGKlNG-BRUSH, BLACKlNGi--HOLDEFL AND DAUBEFI.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,867, dated .I une 6, 1905.
Application iiled May 17, 1904. Serial No. 208,365.
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN D. BLooivr, a citizen of the United States, and ya residentof New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Blacking- Brush, Blacking-Holder,and Dauber, of which the following is a speciiication. f
This invention relates'to that class of blacking-brushes wherein the brush-back contains a well or pocket for the reception of blacking, said back being also provided with a longitudinal recess for the accommodation of the handle of a dauber, so that the combined article thus presented is ofcompact form, convenient for portability, and capable of ready disasseciation when required for use.
The object of. the present invention is to simplify and render more eiiicient the construction of such type of combined articles and to so condition the bristle-carrying part of the dauber with relation to the contiguous por-` .side projections and a transverse limiting projection contiguous to the other end of the back, the said side and transverse projections being undercut to permit the beveled side and end edges of a thin dauber-handle to slidingly engage beneath said projections to retain the dauber in its relation with the bristle-carrying portion of the dauber occupying the recess at the end of the back of the brush proper, the ends of the dauber-bristles, when the dauber is s0 conned, being in a longitudinal plane nearer that'oii the back than that of thebrush than those of the brush proper, whereby the dauberbristles are prevented from smearing. Intermediately in the handle-depression is a circualluded to, are clearly set forth in the subsequent detailed description.
In the laccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a blacking outfit embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section oi' the outfit as it appears in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of said outfit, the plane ofsection being that indicated by the broken line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is an end view of said outt. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the brush proper, the dauber being removed.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts in the several views wherein they occur.
' The brush proper embodies the comparatively thick back A, at the under side of which is secured the plate B, carrying the bunches of bristles Z2. At its upper side the back A has a shallow longitudinally-extended recess a, which is del-ined on three sides by the parallel ledges a and endledge a2. At one end the back has a recess A', which intersects the recess a.
At an intermediate point and somewhat contiguous to the recess A' the back has a circular well or pocket C for the reception of a boX of 'blacking formed by'boring or cutting out the back beof the lower ends of the bristles of the brush proper. Consequently the end recess of said This well or pocket can be fore the latter has the bristle-carrying plate at- IOO back admits of the snug reception of the bristle-carrying portion of the dauber, while the clearance of the dauber-bristles admits of the brush being placed to rest on its bristles without the liability of the dauber-bristles coming in contact with the surface on which the brush rests. Y
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that thecombination article is not only exceedingly" simple inx construction and highly convenient, but it can be compactly arranged and stored in a cleanly manner.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
In a combined brush, blacl'r-ingeholderand dauber'thecombination with'a solid back hav-` ing av vertic'alE recess in one end' on both sides y one. end adapted to slide into the vertical recess formed by the recess in the back of the brush and the recess between the bristles thereof, theendsfof the bristles of thedaubcr coming above the ends of those of the brush, substantially as described.
Y Signed at New York, in the county of New York andState of New York, this 15th day of April, A. D. 1904.
