Figure l is a perspective view of my said combined blackingbrush and blacking-box :holder as it would appear .when the several parts are combined together for the purpose of putting the same away when not in use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the brush by which thc blacking is applied to the boot or shoe. Fig. 3 is aA view showing my said brush and blacking-box holder with the cover or applying-brush B removed. Fig. 4 shows the polishing-brush A, with the handle C and blacking-box H removed therefrom; also showing the screw D and the recess L, wherein the blacking-box H is placed; also the pins M and N, each more fully hereinafter described and set forth. Fig. 5 shows the handle C, which is fastened to the brush A by the screw D, in the manner substantially as hereinafter more fully described and set forth. Figs. 6 and 7 show the blacking-box H and cover I, which are placed in the recess on the back of the brush A, in the manner. and for the purposes hereinafter described and set forth.

The nature of my said invention and improvement consists in the employment of an ordinary polishing-brush, A, with the recess L inthe top thereof, in which is placed a blacking-box, and made fast therein by the means fully hereinafter described and set forth. It also consists in so constructing a blacking-brush that when the same is put away and not in use the blacking-box will be inclosed between the two brushes, and the whole combined together substantially in the manner andfor the purposes more fully described and set forth.

To enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention relates to make and use the same,

I will here proceed to describe the construction j and operation thereof, which are as follows, to

Wit:

I construct my said improved blacking-brush of any size desired, and of any material deemed best. The said polishing-brush A has arecess, K, in the top thereof, into which the handle C is made fast by means of the thumb-screw D. It also has a concave recess, L, in which the blacking-box is placed and made fast by the means 'hereinafter described.

I prefer to use, in connection with my said brush, a blackingbox constructed substantially as seen at Fig. 6, as it possesses advantages over the box now ordinarily in use,

and costs less for its manufacture.

J, Fig. 6, is a lip made upon the edge of the blacking-box. IVhen it is desired tofasten a box of blacking upon the said brush A, the thumb-screw D is loosened and the box placed within the recess L, with the lip J toward the said recess K. The handle C is then pushed forward until it presses against the box H. The thumb-screw D, being then screwed down, will come directly over the lip J of the box Hf, which, being held at the other side by the pins M and N, will rest firmly in its place, substantially as seen at Fig. 3 in the accompanying drawings.

It is obvious that an ordinary blacking-box may be used in connection with my said brush, the said' pins M and N holding it on one side, while the handle C, being pressed against it on the other, will hold it securely in its proper place and position. The pin N may have its head bent a little, and, fitting into a corresponding slot in the box, will more iirmly hold the same in its proper place.

The cover or applyingbrush B is held in itsy place on top of the said brush A by means 0f the pin M, which extends upward and lits into the slot P in the said cover. The handle to the said cover or applying-brush is then pushed under the head of the-thumb-screw D, and is thereby held in its proper place and position when not in use.

I, Fig. 7, is the cover to the blackiug-box, which can be ,thrown away after thebox is fastened to the brush, as hereinbefore described, as the cover or applying-brush B will act as a cover when not in use.

When it is desired to use my said brush and from the fact that all the blacking is used up,

The blackng is put upon the boot or shoe by means of he brush B, using the blacking from the box and the brush A is used for the polishingmush.

Having thus described the nature of my iaid invention, what I claim, and udesire to accure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the removable and Ldjustable handle C, having a slot-mortise in ,he front end thereof, so as to receive the humb-screw D, with the brush A, containing ;he recess K, and with the said thumb-screw D, each being arranged in the manner and for he purposes substantially as herein described und set forth.
