UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' AMOS G. FITZ, OF AUBURN, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO FITZ DOUBLE PIVOT LAST COMPANY, OF
AUBURN, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
LAST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos Gr. Frrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Androsooggin and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lasts and more particularly to means for preventing the last from splitting on vertical longitudinal lines.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making part of this application, Figure 1 is aperspective view of a portion of a last with parts broken out showing one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a last, parts broken out showing a different embodiment of my invention.
Same letters of reference, except as otherwise specified, refer to like parts.
In said drawings A represents a portion of a last; B a thimble adapted to be inserted vertically in the heel part thereof. Said thimble is provided with projections or bonds C adapted to take into the body of the last on either side of a longitudinal medial line. The bonds may be formed integral with the thimble or secured thereto in any convenient manner. In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown the bonds formed at the top of the thimble and adapted to be bent down into the last from the top, the bonds on each side being adapted to enter the last at a greater or less distance to one side of said medial line.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a thimble provided with flexible bonds passing across the top of the last laterally and down the sides and taking into the sides below the top thereof.
The thimble may have ears E adapted to receive holding pins F.
The advantages of my improved invention are that the last is strongly fortified by the bonds against the strain which tends to split it in Vertical longitudinal lines which strain is greatest on a line passing centrally through the thimble hole.
Having thus described my invention and its use I claim- 1. The combination with a last of a thimble provided at the top with diverging flexible bonding prongs adapted to be bent downwardly and to take into the wood of the last on either side of the medial longitudinal line of the last.
2. The combination with a last of a thimble provided. at the top with flexible bonding prongs adapted to be bent downwardly and to take into the wood of the last on either side of the medial longitudinal line of the last.
3. The combination with a last of a thimble provided atthe top with flexible bonding prongs adapted to be bent downwardly and to take into the wood of the last on either side of the medial line of the last, the prongs on opposite sides of the medial line pressing the wood toward the medial line.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of July, 1907, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LAUREN M. SANBORN, ELGIN O. VERRILL.
