Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed June 21, 1917. Serial No. 176,146.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LANDON H. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lampasas, in the county of Lampasas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spurs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spurs and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with a forked end, having a rowel at each end of the fork.
Another object of the invention is to provide a broad surface adjacent the rowel for preventing the same from penetrating too far into the hide of the horse.
A further object of the invention is to make the ends of the fork carrying the rowels, in the shape of a foot so as to pre sent an ornamental appearance, as well as the broad surface above described for preventing injury to the horse.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 shows the invention in place on the shoe.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is an end view.
In these figures, 1 represents the body of the device, having its front end of U-shape to fit the heel part of the shoe, and the ends of this U-shaped part carry the thumb screws 2 for clamping the spur to the shoe.
The other end of the device is forked and the two parts 3 of this forked end lie in the same vertical plane and at their extreme ends these parts are provided with slots 4 for receiving the rowels 5 which are held in place by the pins 6. As shown, these rowels are placed one above the other and only a small portion thereof projects beyond the ends of the parts 3, and the ends of these parts are made in the shape of a foot, as at so as to present an ornamental appearance as well as a broad surface for preventing the rowels from entering too far into the horses hide. The double rowel feature tends to prevent the spur from slipping when being used and the double shank will make the spur much stronger.
It will be seen that the toe part of the foot is uppermost and extends quite a distance beyond the rowel so that when the spur comes in contact with the horses body this toe part will slide along the body to move the hair out of the path of the rowel and at the same time prevent said rowel from cutting into the horses hide.
If it should become necessary to use the spur more severely this may be done by bending the knee so as to bring the bottom rowel only into contact with the horse and in this position the toe part will not touch the horse and the rowel will enter more deeply into the horses hide.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A spur comprising a body part having a forked end, the parts of the fork being in the same vertical plane and a rowel carried at the end of each part.
2. A spur comprising a body part having a forked end, the parts of the fork being in the same vertical plane and having a slot in their extreme end, said end being formed in the shape of a foot, and arewel carried upwardly beyond the cutting edge of the in each slot. rowel. 10
3. A spur comprising a body part having In testimony whereof I affix my signature a forked end, the parts of the fork being in in presence of tWo Witnesses. the same vertical plane and each having a V LANDON H. COOK slot in its extreme end, a rowel carried in Witnesses: said slot, said end being formed in the shape F. S. ALEXANDER, of a foot, the toe part of'whieh projects C. A. PARKER.
