LEVI w. SHOREY, or ROCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 224,234, dated February 3, 1880.
Application filed December 6, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI W. SHOREY, of Rochester, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lasts for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal section of my improved last. Fig. 2 is a top view ofthe iron body, and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same.
This invention has relation to lasts; and it consists in the construction and novel arrange ment of parts, as hereinafter shown and described. w
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the iron base or body portion of the last, having the toe portion a and the heel portion b extending the full height, while the middle portion is depressed between the shoulders c and d to receive the wooden upper-block B. I
The sole of the last is provided with channels or grooves 0, parallel with its edges, and extending either wholly or partially around the sole. These channels are made sufficiently deep to receive the ends of the pegs. Around the sole, on the margins z of these grooves,
the surface is creased, chased,or roughened to prevent the inner sole from pressing into the groove or grooves.
In the toe portion of the sole is made a reeess, g, which is designedto receive a wooden plug, h, and recesses g and g are also formed the last may be recessed in order to' make it light.
The iron portion is easily and economically made by casting, and will be very strong and durable.
I am aware that iron-lasts having recesses and dovetail grooves in their sole portions, and the same being tilled with plugs of wood, also that serrated sole-plates secured to the bottom of wooden lasts, are none of them new; hence I make no claim to such devices, broadly.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
lS' w The last consisting of the metallic body deeply recessed between its heel and toe portion, the wooden block B, fitting the recess thus formed, the plug-recesses g g g g in the iron body, and the open grooves 6, extending lengthwise in the base thereof, and the serrated.margins z of said 'grooves,to prevent the leather from pressing into the same, as shown and described.
In testimony'that 'I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my'naine in the presence of two witnesses.
LEVI W. SHOREY. Witnesses D. F. BU'RTT,
ALBERT T. OoTToN.
