GEORGE E. ROLLINS, OF BBOQKTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO MORRIS E. SHIMELOVICH, OF BBOCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LAST.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. RoLLINs, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brockton, county of Plymouth, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lasts, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characterson the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to lasts used in the manufacture of boots and shoes, and will be best understood by reference to the following specification when taken in connection with the accompanying illustration of one specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure lis a bottom plan of a last embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1, showing an inner sole upon the bottom of the last; and Fig.3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, also showing an inner sole on the bottom of the last.
Referring to the drawings and to the embodiment of my invention which I have there shown for illustrative purposes, 5 is the body of a last which may be of any usual or desired style or type. The last body is provided upon its bottom with a depression 6, which may extend any desired distance along the last, but in the present exemplification is shown extending along its shank portion. This depression is preferably transversely concaved (see Fig. 3), and is preferably substantially as wide as the shank portion of the last. The last body is preferably provided with a second depression 7 of less width than the width of the shank portion, and this depression also is preferably transversely concaved (see Fig. 3). This depression may extend not only along the shank portion of the last, but along ihe hejel portion as well if desired (see The depression 7 may be lined with a metallic plate 8 shaped suitably to fit the depression and having its marginal portions 99 turned upwardly to fit the inclined sides of the depression, but terminating just short of the edges of the depression, and
forming in the bottom of the plate a depression or concavity 10. 'This plate Specification 0! Letters Patent.
Application filed December 26, 1912. Serial No. 738,594.
may be, and preferably is, extended and widened laterally at the heel portion of the last to the full width, and having the same outline as the heel, so as to serve as an anvil for clenching the lasting tacks and heel nails. The plate may be secured to the last body by any suitable means, as for example a plurality of nails 11.
In Figs. 2 and 3, I have illustrated an inner sole 12 applied to the last and shaped to fit the concavities 6 and 10. This shape of the inner sole may be produced by molding or pressing the inner sole either before or after the same is applied to the last, and in any event during the leveling of the shoe, the pressure will of course compel the inner sole to take the shape of the depressions in the last. Thus there is produced an inner sole having on its upper or inner side along the shank portion and-along a part of the heel portion a transverse crown which serves as a support along the soft central portion If desired, the body of the last may be provided along the marginal portion of the depression 6 with suitable means for pre-' venting the raised edge formed by the depression from becoming worn away or injured. For this purpose, I may provide a pair of metallic inserts 13-13, placed in saw kerfs or grooves 1l14, and serving to keep the edge of the depression sharply defined. There is left between these metallic inserts and the edges of the plate 8 a space into which the lasting tacks may be driven along the shank portion of the last in the customary manner.
lVhile I have hereinshown and described one embodiment of my invention for illustrative purposes, and have disclosed and discussed in detail the construction and arrangement incidental to one specific application thereof, it is to be understood that the invention is limited neither to the mere details or relative arrangement of parts nor to its specific embodiment herein shown, but that extensive deviations from the illustrated form or embodiment of the invention may be made without departing from the ward end adjacent the rear portion of its :0.
principles thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to procure is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a last provided upon the bottom of its shank-portion with a'transversely concaved depression of substantially the whole width of the shank-portion, and a relatively narrower depression within the lateral limits of the first.
2. In a last, the combination of a lastbody, and a plate secured to the bottom of said last body along the shank-portion, said plate being narrower than said shank-portion, and being provided with a transversely concaved depression.
3. In a last, the combination of a lastbody, and a transversely concaved plate secured to the bottom of said last. body and extending along the heel and shank portions only.
4. In a last, the combination of a last- I body, and a plate secured to the bottom of said last-body at the heel-portion and along fore part.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a last provided upon the bottom of its shank-portion with a transversely rounded depression of substantially the whole width of the shank-portion and extending along the shank-portion only.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a last provided upon the bottom of its shank-portion with a substantially centrally disposed depression of substantially less width than the'width of the shank-portion, said depression terminating at its forward end adjacent the rear portion of the fore part.
7. In a last, the combination of a lastbody provided with a transversely concaved depression extending along the shank-portion, a metal plate extending along the central part of the shank-portion, and metal strips extending along the edges of the shank-portion and spaced from said plate.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
