Description

Oct. 14, 1930. s. R. YBLAKELY 1,773,580
LAST
Filed Feb. 14. 1929 Patented Oct. 14, 1930 PATENT orricr SIDNEY R. BLAKELY, F JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS LAST Application filed February 14, 1929. Serial No. 339,812.
The present invention relates to lasts, and .more particularly to lasts adapted and intended for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes.
The last of the present application is equally applicable to welt, McKay, turn or cemented boots or shoes. This last lends itself with peculiar advantage to cooperating with my novel insole, which is illustrated, de-
scribed and claimed in my copending application Ser. No. 339,811, filed February 14,
In ladies shoes, and particularly those shoes having high heels, a serious disadvantage and difficulty is present, in that the weight of the wearer is forced downwardly into the forepart of the shoe, on the toes and ball of the foot, often resulting in harm and injury to the wearer, and often creating se- 0 rious orthopedic ailments. My novel shoe and insole obviate and eliminate this difficulty by providing, at the heel and on the interior of the shoe, a pocket, defined by an abrupt break or drop in the insole, in which pocket a suitable heel cushion or pad may be placed, and which pocket, because of this abrupt break, will afford a seat or grip for the heel of the wearer inside the shoe, thus supporting a large portion of the weight of the wearer on the heel, rather than transmitting the entire weight to the ball and toes of the foot.
This beneficial result is obtained only by the use of my novel last, and an important object of the present invention, therefore, is
the provision and manufacture of a last having therein an abrupt break between the planes of the shank of the last and the heel of the last, this break being defined bya substantially vertical wall of substantial height squarely across the portion of the heel of the last which corresponds to the heel breast.
Thus when my novel insole is applied to this last it will conform to the shape thereof, and will have, in the resulting shoe, a pocket of substantial depth with a straight edge across the front thereof, against which the heel of the wearer will rest when the weight of the wearer is put on the foot.
Another object of the invention, particularly when applied to a last for use in the manufacture of McKay boots or shoes, resides in utilizing a metallic covering or plate over the entire bottom surface of the last, the plate covering the heel bottom being on a different plane from the plate covering the shank portion, this difference in planes resulting from the sharp or abrupt break at the heel portion and the resulting vertical or substantially vertical wall. In my novel lasts there will not only be a substantially vertical wall, or a wall substantially perpendicular to the plane of the shank of the last adjacent the heel, but there wili be a 55 substantially right-angle where the bottom of the said wall commences, thus insuring a relatively sharp forward edge to the heel pocket in the completed shoe.
I believe that a last constructed according to the above briefly described invention is novel, and I have therefore claimed the same broadly in the present application.
The above and other objects and features of the invention, details of construction and advantages, will be hereinafter more fully pointed out, described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, illustrating preferred embodiments of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a McKay last embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a McKay last as illustrated in Fig. l;
v Fig. 3 is a cross'sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the heel portion;
I F ig.-4 is a bottom plan view of the heel portion of the McKaylast; and
'Fig. 5 is a side elevation of my invention embodied in a welt last. 7 v
Referring now to the drawings, for aparticular description .of the invention, 1 designates a block last adapted for use in the manufactureof McKay boots or shoes. It will be'understood and appreciated, however, 95 that I may apply my invention, with equal facility and resulting advantages, to any type of last, whether block, hinge or other style.
The forepart and shank of this last has applied thereto a metallic clinching plate. 2 100 which terminates at the rear of the shank portion of the last.
his plate is secured to the last bottom by nails 3, and by a screw 4 at the toepart, if desired, and is provided wita the usual apertures 5 for insole taclcs. Closely adjacent to the termination of this plate 2, I provide my novel last with a rounded projection 6, this projection having a forward wall '7 which is substantially vertical, or in other words, substantially perpendicular to the shank portion adjacent to said wall. The angle 8, between said wall "I and the shank of the last, is approximately a right-angle, as illustrated. Secured to the projection 6 is a metallic clinching plate 9 secured thereto by the nails 10 and having an insole tack aperture 11 therein.
From an inspection of hi gs. 1 and 3 it will be noted that the plate 9 is on an entirely different plane from the plate 2 at the shank portion. Thus, when the novel insole of my said copending application is applied to this last, it will conform to the angle 8 and be provided with a substantially vertical wall on the interior of the shoe, against which the heel of the wearer will abut or rest. This wall 7 preferably extends squarely across the bottom of the last, although it will be appreciated that the face of said wall may be formed slightl arcuate transversely of the last, if desired.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated my invention applied to a hinge last 12 for use in the manufacture of a welt shoe, this last also having a substantially vertical wall 13 extending squarely across the front of the heel portion of the'last, a metallic clinching plate 14 being applied to the projection at the heel portion, as shown. In this type of last the shank 15 has no metal plate thereon, although a plate may be applied to the toe portion of the last if desired.
The advantages incident to the use of my nov l lasts, particularly in conjunction with the manufacture of the boots or shoes of said copending application, will be instantly apparent to and appreciated by those skilled in this art.
lVhile I have necessarily described my present invention somewhat in detail, it will be appreciated that I may vary the size, shape and arrangement of parts within reasonably wide limits without departing from the spirit of the invention.
My invention is further described and defined in the form of claims as follows:
1. In a last for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes, a rounded projection at the heel portion thereof, said projection having a substantially vertical wall at the front thereof extending squarely across said last at the rear of the shank.
2. In a last for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes, a rounded projection at the heel portion thereof, said projection having a substantially vertical wall at the front thereof extending squarely across said last the rear of the shank, there being a substantially right-angle between said wall and the rear portion of the shank.
3. In a last for use in the manufacture McKay boots or shoes, a projection at the e portion thereof having a substantially "or ical wall at the front thereof extending uarely across said lastat the rear of the uni: thereof, metallic clinching plates on i shank and on said heel projection, said plates being on different planes.
4. In a last for use in the manufacture of llfcKay boots or shoes, a. plurality of metallic clinching plates on the shank and heel portions, said clinching plates being on different planes, the forward end of the-heel portion having a substantially vertical" wall extending transversely of the last, the metallic p. lte on said shank terminating closely adjacent to said wall.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
SIDNEY R. BLAKELY.
