Patented Aug G, i912.
Application filed February 24, 1912- Serial No. 679,715.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, llonnis B. QUACI\"-\*- nUs -i, a citizen of the I nited States, residing at Big Rapids in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice- Creepers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accom-- panying d-rawi "s.
This inventlon relates to ice creepers, and an ob ectthereofis the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, cheaply manufactured and easily, applied to a shoe to prevent slipping upon icy surfaces.
Another object of this invention is to provide an ice creeper having fastening means which may be quickly and easily replaced if broken.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be. hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ice creeper showing it in applied position. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof, and, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional View taken through the median line of the device.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference the numeral 1 designates generally my improved ice creeper formed of one piece of metal and which consists of a sole portion 2, the instep portion 3 and the heel portion'. The instep. portion is ofi'set as at 5 so that the sleeper will conform to the shape of the bottom of the shoe. Vertical lugs 6 are formed on the sole and heel portions of. the creeper to prevent lateral movement with relationto the shoe."
A slit Tis formed in the instep portion of the shoe at the angle of the offset portion through which one end of a U-shaped. strap retainer 8 is passed and bent down'upon the upper surface of the creeper as at 9. The opposite end of the strap retainer is hingedly secured to the bottom surface of the creeper 'as at 10. The strap retainer is also provided with, a pin 11 which is adapted to enter a strap 12 and securely fasten it to the creeper. Should the strap become broken the end of the retainer may be bent uppointed heads 14: are secured to the sole and heel portions of the creeper which will pre vent slipping upon icy surfaces.
'It will be readily understood that a de vice of this character will be securely held to the shoe by means of the strap and that a broken strap maybe quickly removed from the retainer by disengaging its free end froin the creepen.
Having thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is L An ice creeper-for shoes comprising a sole portion. an instep portion and a heel portion, calks secured to the heel and sole portions thereof, vertical lugs formed on the said heeland sole portions, and a U-shaped strap retainer hingedly secured to the instep portion of the creeper thereby detachably holding a strap for securing the creeper to a shoe.
2. An ice creeper for shoes comprising a sole portion, a heel portion and an instep portion having a slit therein, calks and lugs secured to the sole and heel portions thereof, the instep portion being offsetnear the said heel portion to conform to the shape of the shoe, a U-shaped strap retainer hingedly secured at one end thereof to the instep portion, and having its opposite end detachably secured in the slit therein, and a pin formed on the said strap retainer; whereby the strap is removably secured to the creeper.
3. An ice creeper having a strap retaining member hingedly secured thereto, and a strap detachably connected to the retaining member to secure the creeper to a shoe.
4. An ice creeper having aU-shaped strap retainer hingedly secured atone end to the creeper, the opposite end of said retainer being removably secured to the creeper, and
a strap detachably connected to the retaining member to secure the creeper to a shoe. In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
