JOSEPH GRANMER, OF NEAR GREENVILLE, MICHIGAN.
HAIR-COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 28, 1909.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Serial No. 525,204.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH CRANMER, a citizen of the United States, residing near Greenville, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair- Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in appliances for holding ladies back combs to place after they have been placed in the hair, and its object is to provide a set of detachable wings that may be readily applied or removed, at the pleasure of the wearer.
I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a back elevation of acomb with the wings attached. Figs. 2, 8 and t are sectional views of the comb on the line a: 00 of Fig. 1 showing several forms of fastenings for the wings. Fig. 5 is an elevation of one end of a comb showing a slot for holding the form of wing shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 shows a metal spring attached to the wing for clamping it to the comb.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the back, or supporting element of an ordinary ladys back comb, and A represents the teeth of the same. For the purpose of conveniently applying properly formed wings for securing this comb to place after it has been placed in the hair, I make use of a body B having teeth B, which form a small comb, and to hold these combs or wings securely to the back A of the comb, I form or place a spring clamp, as b or Z), upon each wing, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6, in such a position that they may be readily slipped upon the edges of the back of the comb with the teeth B of the wings standing inward at right angles with the teeth of the comb, so that when the comb teeth are pressed down into the hair the teeth of the wings may be shoved into the hair back of the comb and they will be held securely to place by the springs 12 with such locking appliances as may be desired. Thus, in Fig. 2 I have shown a small pin 0 inserted through, or projecting inward from the spring Z) and passing into a hole cl in the back of the comb. In Fig. 3 I have shown a soft rubber lining c placed upon the inner surface of the spring 5 in position to be forced, by the spring, firmly against the surface of the comb so that it will hold the wings to place by the adhesive qualities of the soft rubber, while in Fig. 4: I have dispensed with the spring I) entirely and have placed a pin 0 in the body B of the wing and have formed a slot cl in the comb back into which the pin may be slid to hold the wing to the comb back, as more plainly shown in Fig. 4. In Fig. 6 I have shown, the wing made with a spring made of the same or other material and riveted to the body of the wing.
I have shown these several forms of fastening to illustrate that it is not necessary to confine the fastening appliance to any one special construction, the germ of my invention lying more particularly in the use 6f a fastening device for back combs that may be readily attached and removed, and when attached will not be liable to become detached except at the effort of the wearer, and will hold the comb so securely to place as to render the danger of the comb dropping out of the hair, almost, or quite impossible.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In combination with a ladys back comb, wings arranged to apply to the edge of the back of the comb at right angles with the teeth of the comb, and means connected with said wings whereby they may be readily secured to or removed from the comb after the comb has been placed in the hair of the wearer.
2. In combination with a ladys back comb, wings arranged with a series of teeth and adapted to be secured to the edge of the back of the comb at right angles with the teeth thereof, and spring clamps connected with the wings and adapted to engage the edge of the back of the comb and be readily removed therefrom.
3. In combination with a ladys back holes in the bacl: of the comb and hold the Wings firmly to place. 10
Signed at Grand Rapids Michigan October 25, 1909.
JOSEPH CRANMER.
