Be .it knownthat I, ERNEST S. GoLDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county ofPhiladelphia and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lImprovements in Tooth-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention particularly relates to tooth-brushes of the class wherein the brushhead is adapted to be inclosed in a protective casing, when notvin use.

The principal objects of this invention are to provide a tooth-brushwith a removable hollow handle, which is preferably shaped fron? a primarily flat unitary stamping of sheet material, soformed as to provide a closure for the brush-head when not in use; to provide a socket into which the brush shank is fitted when operatively connected with said handle; and to provide a bayonet connection between said shank and handle to insure their rigid connection when in operative relation.

The brush constructed in accordance with this invention is advantageous, in that it prevents distortion of the bristles when not in use, and prevents their unsanitary contact with unclean objects, as,'for instance, the pocket of the user, thus preventingmoistening the pocket lining; and, furthermore, when the brush-head is inclosed in the handle, the structure is reduced to substantially one-half its normal length as when said brush-head and handle are operatively related.

The form ,of this invention, hereinafter described, provides a brush with a detachable handle, which forms a closure for the brush-head when not in use, and which has an extended portion, preferably cylindrical, forming a socket, and having a substantially spirally disposed slot, said-socket bein arranged to receive the conical shank of the brush-head, which may be snugly fitted in said socket, and which is provided with a lug engageable with said slot to prevent accidental displacement of said brush-head when its shank is operatively engaged with the socket in said extended portion.

This invention further includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a `perspective View of the brush and its detac able handle in operative relation; Fig. 2 1s a side elevation of the brush handle,

showing the brush detached therefrom and in closed therein, in inoperative relation; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the-line 3 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken centrally through the brush handle, showing the brush in elevation, operatively connected with said handle; and Fi 5 is a plan view ofthe sheet metal stamplng extended in a plane and ready for folding to form the brush handle.

In said figures, the casing 1 includes the bottom wall 2, the sidewalls 3 and 4, the top wall 5, and end wall 6. Said side wall is provided with lugs 8 and 9, which are extended through the apertures 10 and 11 in the top wall 5, and headed over to form the substantially rectangular casing, best shown in Fig. l. .The wall 6 is provided with a lug l14, which is extended through the aperture 15 in said wall 5 and headed over, and

forms the end inclosure for said casing.

The casing thus formed conveniently provides a handle for the brush, and the bottom wall 2 of said casing is provided with the extension 16, which is preferably cylindriform, to provide a socket for the conical shank 17 of the brush-head 18, which is provided with the bristles 20. Said shank 17 `is provided with the projecting pin or lug 21, which, when said shank is operatively connected wit-h the handle, is slidably engaged with the bayonet slot 22 in the extension 16 formin the walls of said socket.

As best shown 1n Fig. 5, the casing 1 is formed from a unitary stamping of sheet material 25, preferably metal, which is folded upon the dot and. dash lines therein indicated, to form the handle of the brush, and which at the same time provides a casing for the reception and protection of` said brush when detached, as shown in Fig. 2.Y said brush being engaged in operative position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, by telescopically fitting the shank 17 into the socket formed by the walls of the extension 16 with its lug 21 engaged with the bayonet slot 22, s0 that, as may be readily seen, as said shank is fitted into said socket the brush is given substantially a quarter turn, and the lug 21 prevents accidental longitudinal displacement of said brush with respect to its handle.

3. A tooth-brush comprising a detachable handle, forming a caslng for said brush when detached, one wall of said casing being extended outwardly and turned to form a split cylindricall socket arranged to receive the shank of said brush, and to form an extension ofsaid shank. v
