To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Sci-innen- LiN, citizen oi the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cans and more particularly to the manner oi attaching a lid or cover to a can by means of its hinge.
An object of theinvention is to furnish a very simple means of attaching a lid or cover to a can by means of its hinge, that will require a minimum of work in the attaching operation, that will be thoroughly strong, and cost but little to produce.
Another object is to attach a hinged lid or cover to a can or other metal package in such a way that even under exceedingly rough usage the hinge cannot readily be torn from' said can or package.
Another object is to provide a manner of attaching a hinge to a receptacle which will not require the use of solder, rivets or other attaching means, merely depending upon the material entering into the construction oi' the can and its strengthening parts.
To the end that my invention may be readily understood, I have provided the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a part of a can and a lid or cover for the same, showing thel manner of inclosing a hinge portion of said lid or cover between portions of the can' top. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a can, produced on a smaller scale, of that portion to which the lid or cover is to be attached; and, Fig. 3 shows, in perspective, the manner oi' attaching the hinge to a can, part vof the wall of the can being broken away to show the structure. y
The can is represented by the letter A, its rear side, or that to which the cover is to be attached being illustrated in Fig. 2. Said rear side is provided near each edge with a slot B spaced from the top edge of the can at a distance substantially equal to the height of the cover to be attached.
In Figs. 1 and 3 the lid or cover is indicated by the letter C, there being attached thereto in any suitable or desired manner a hinge portion D which includes the usual hinge pin E, Engaging the portion D and said hinge pm E in any usual or well known way is an extension F which is introduced through the slot B and bent up along the inner surface of the wall.
Most cans employedv for the storage and the folded-over portion indicated at B in Figs. 2 and 3 and thus securely held, it being observed that the said portion G after being extended inward is bent down at II and thence toward the hinge into the portion J but other ways of folding the metal may be employed so that the hinge extension F will be firmly grasped.
Preferably I employ in my can structure an angle-member K for more thoroughly strengthening a can of this type which at the same time provides a double secured means ot' holding the hinge extensions. This is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. One of its limbs lies against that portion of the hinge extension that arises from the slot B, its
other limb, which in this instance' lies at right angles to the first, being parallel to the top edge of the can, the hinge extension F being 'of sufiicient length to overlie both limbs so as tov be clamped between the wall of the can, the folded-over portion G, and the said angle-member. This provides a very convenient manner of securing the hinged cover to a receptacle, there being nothing required in the way of extra parts or means for securing the hinge extension merely the body portion of the can or the strengthening angle piece K, is employed.
By reason of the fact vthat no rivets or solder or other outside medium is used to secure the hinge, the construction is rendered exceedingly cheap in that there are no operations required to attach the hinge beyond the necessary folding of the part G I-I J which is provided in any case to produce a properly strengthened can. Furthermore such a folding in method prevents too easy separation of the lid from the can as results from the older means of attaching the hinged parts.
In the assembling operation the hinge extensions are inserted through the slots B and bent to position and suitable dies used in constructing thecan serve to clamp all the parts together, completing the attachment of the lid or cover at one stroke.
This application is a divisional one of a copending application for a can, filed J anuary 8, 1914, under Serial No. 811,064.
It is not my purpose to be conned to the exact construction described and shown since slight changes may be made that will lie within the meaning of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:-
l. The combination with a receptacle, a portion of one of whose walls is bent at an angle to the plane of said wall to form a strengthening part for said wall, vand a cover or lid for said receptacle, of a part hingedly attached to said cover or lid and bent with and folded in with said 'wall portion to secure said part and the wall portion relatively.
2. The combination with a receptacle having a portion extending from one of its walls at an angle to the plane thereof forming a strengthening portion for said wall, and a cover or lid for said receptacle, of a part hingedly attached to said cover or lid and bent with and folded in with said portion to secure said part and said portion relatively and permanently.
8. 'Ihe combination with a receptacle, a portion of one of whose walls is bent away from the plane thereof and then recurved, and a cover or lid, of a part hingedly attached to said cover or lid and extending into the described bent portion and bent with it and folded in with the same.
4. The combination with a receptacle having an opening in one of its walls and having a portion of said wall bent away from the plane thereof and recurved, and a lid or cover, of a part hingedly attached to said cover or lid and extending through the said opening and bent to conform with the bend of the wall and folded in with the same.
' 5. The combination with a can having an opening .in its wall and a lid or cover for attachment to the can, of an extension hingedly attached to the cover and extending through the opening into the can, thence being bent parallel to the wall through which it projects and extending toward the top of the can, thence extending parallel to the top edge of the can and engaging a part of the body of the can and clamped in position by the same.
6. In combination, a can having an opening in one of its walls, a lid or cover for attachment to the can, an extension hingedly attached to the cover and extending through the opening into the can, a member overlying the same and holding the extension between it and the wall of the can, the latter having a bent-over portion inclosing part of the member and a part of the extension therein.
7 In combination, a can having an opening in one of its Walls and having a portion at its top bent inward overhanging the interior of the can and recurved in the direction of the wall having the opening, and extension hingedly attached to the cover and extending through the opening, and lying upon the inner wall and thence extending into the recurved portion and clamped by the same.
8. In combination, a can having an opening in one of its walls and having a portion at its top bent inward and overhanging the interior of the can and recurved in the direction of the wall having the opening, an extension hingedly attached to the cover and projecting through the opening and lying upon the inner wall, thence extending into the recurved portion, and a member having two limbs lying at right angles to one another, one of said limbs overlying a part of the extension, its other limb being inclosed together with the extremity of the extension within the said recurved portion and clamped upon the same.
