A TTOHNE Y.
UNITED STATES PAT T OFFICE.
CLOT ILDE PILARD THOMAS, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
TOI LET-POWDER CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,412, dated May 30, 1893. Application filed June 27,1892. Serial No. 438,222. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLOTILDE PILARD THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, county of Vanderburg, State of Indiana, have invented a Portable Case for Toilet Powder, an Adjustable Powder-Pad, and a Pad-Holder, (which invention has never been patented in any country and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to certain improvements in powder boxes.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved powder box which is very cheap and simple in construction and yet durable and neatand attractive in appearance, and which can be easily and conveniently carried and which is provided with puff or pad holder so arranged and constructed that the pad can be easily detached, cleaned or replaced by a new pad when desired.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed'out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the box and pad complete. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the pad and its handle or holder. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the pad holder opened and the pad removed. Fig. 4. is a detail elevation of the pad. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the box and pad and holder therein.
In the drawings thereference letter a, indicates the box which contains the toilet powder. This box can be of any desired shape or dimensions, but is preferably, flat and oval in shape so that it can be easily and conveniently carried. The box is open at one end and closed at the other.
1), indicates the pad or puff made of any suitable material and in any suitable manner. However this pad is preferably although not necessarily composed of j ute or the equivalent material bunched and closely twisted into any shape required by the size and shape of the case or box and provided with a suitable covering of fabric, chamois, fibrous material, or cider-down. The pad is then glued, or otherwise rigidly secured to a head 0, having its edges projecting beyond the sides of the pad as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
(1, indicates the cover or handle for the pad preferably having a knob as shown. This cover is hollow or recessed in its under side or bottom and is shaped to. form a cover for and tightly close the powder case. is at one edge hinged at f, to the lower edge of the cover to swing within the same. This ring is provided with a lateral lug or lip 9 arranged to project through a slot in the edge of the cover. In assembling the parts of the device the ring 6 is swung out of the holder and the pad is placed through the ring so that the head 0 of the pad rests on the ring; the ring is then swung into the cover so as tofit snugly in the same and thereby firmly attach the pad and form a holder for the same; The parts are preferably arranged so that the ring fits in the cover tight enough to hold the parts although if desirable fastening means might be employed. By means of the projection g, the ring a, can be swung out whenever desired, and the pad removed for cleansing, recovering or any other reason.
When not in use the pad is placed in the case and the holder forms a tight cover for the case as shown in Fig. 1. The case contains the powder and the pad rests in contact with the same and in readiness for instant use.
Suitable means can be provided to hold the cover in the case, such as spring catches c, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
This device is of great utility and is very simple cheap, durable and convenient.
What I claim is 1. The toilet article composed of the case, the detachable cover for said case, the pad having a head, and means, substantially as described for detachably securing said head to said cover so that the cover forms a handle for the pad, substantially as set forth.
2. The toilet article composed of the case, the cover for said case, the pad formed of a body such as jute or the like provided with a suitable covering and rigidly secured to a head, and means for detachably securing said head to said cover so that the cover forms a handle for the pad, substantially as described.
3. The toilet article consisting of the powder case, the holder forming a cover'for said case, the ring hinged to said holder and arranged to swing into the same, and the pad having the head arranged to fit said ring as described and be held thereby to the holder, 5 substantially as described.
4. In combination a powder ease, the hollow holder forming a cover for said case, means to detachably secure the holde to the ease,
the ring hinged to the holder to swing to the same and having the opening finger projec- [0 tion, and the pad having the head to fit said ring, as described.
